A-833, all the same? - 04/10/11 04:45 AM
Are there differences in an A-833 from A, B E-bodies?

Yes. I'm not an 833 expert, but the shifter mount pads are all different between A/B/E bodies. 64-69 B/C body trannys are their own deal. While 70-up B and E bodies share the same transmission with the 2 seperate mount pads cast into the same tailshaft.
I believe the transmission mount point also changed in 1970. Prior to then the B body 4 speed transmission had it's own trans mount cross member but the 70 up units are the same as a 727. A body transmissions have a shifter mount in between the B and E bodies, with it's own shorter tail shaft.

Thanks guys for the info. If I read correctly, it sounds like the newer OD units should work in an E-Body correct? Would you rather have the OD unit over the non OD unit?

The OD 833 will fit and work, but there are NO bolt in Big Block bellhousings to fit. There are ways around that though...........

A few years back I pulled and bought 4 833 OD transmissions from Pick n Pull. They came in trucks and vans, slant six and 318s. NO 360s came with this trans. I'm not sure why though.
I have an F body iron case 833 OD in my brother in laws 360 Duster. The trans came from a slant six Volare. We used a 318 bellhousing and a balanced 360 flywheel. All is well!
You could do the same using a truck/van trans since the tailshaft housing is the same overall design as the E body and 71 and later B body design. The clutch fork will need to stay with the truck 318 bell. In some cases, the fork for the trucks are a different length than the cars. I cant remember which was shorter. The reason that I mention it it because it will affect the stiffness of the pedal. A shorter fork requires MORE pedal effort due to it having less leverage. I had to mix and match a few things, but it all works. Good luck and keep us posted!

64 & 65 trans are easy to spot as they have one mounting pad and have the bolt on ball and trunion end.Rocky
