69 RR, steering column loose/up/down in car, help?? - 04/07/11 09:52 PM

The steering column shaft in my 69 RR has come loose. Basically you can pull it towards you maybe an inch which then causes a lot of up/ down freeplay on the shaft assy. I rebuilt/restored my steering column myself and and I'm nervous I didn't do something right. I had a problem with the sheer pins melting during powder coating (I'll never do that again..) but I replaced them with similar plastic pins/screw from lowes like was recommended on here. The shaft is moving inside the column between the firewall and the wheel, cause in the eng compartment the shaft doesn't move when you wiggle it inside. My steering column is a manual steering 4spd version. I didn't have this problem until after a few hundred miles on the car, but the 255/17s and manual steering cause a lot of ummph on the wheel at times. I could really use some help on what may be causing this.

Top snap ring may have come off, allowing shaft to drop. Look at service manual for assembly diagram.

Any other ideas? Could it be the sheer pins?
