Oil on valley pan

Yesterday, as I was taking a couple pics of my engine I noticed some oil on my valley pan. It appears to have run down from the passenger side where the intake bolts to the head nearest the firewall.

Forgive my ignorance, but would the bolt be wet in this area or is the valley pan not sealing correctly?

It's crappy out right now so I have to wait before I can examine it further.

Yes the bolts that hold the intake are WET , meaning they will have oil to the backside of them. Check to see if they are loose, you might be sucking oil into those back ports.

You might want to pull the intake to have a look, quick fix might be to add one paper gasket between the intake and the valley pan, assuming you didn't already have to force in the bolts on one side the last time you put it on .

yup. the intake manifold bolts go through the head into the open crankcase area, where oil can splash onto the back sides of the bolts. if the bolts are loose or something isn't lined up/sealed correctly, you could get oil seeping through the threads and dripping down the intake to the valley pan.

another option, is if you have excessive crankcase pressure from poor ring seal, or a plugged PCV valve, and the pressure bows up on the valley pan, this flexing will eventually cause it to crack, and then oil can seep through the crack and pool under the intake manifold.

I have 2 vented caps. The driver's side goes to the air cleaner and the passenger side is just a vented cap (soon to be replaced with a pcv valve hooked to the carb).

If I pull the bolt and it has oil on it, should I use some sealer on it?

Can't hurt. I used sealer on all of my intake bolts. I applied it about a quarter inch up on the threads.

I have good luck with the loc-tite teflon pipe sealent,less clean up with R&R of the intake next go round.

I am gonna go out and do that in a little while. I think I have a tube of Permatex white in the garage.

WHAT would the torque be for the manifold bolts? Performer 440.
