426 max wedge heads on a 440? - 04/07/11 12:32 AM

I have 1964 max wedge heads fully rebuilt (1500.00$ later), will they fit a 1969 440 block? If so any idea what I should do to make it street capable?

---->> Head # 2402286 ( there is another number 6-27 along with some letters)
---->> Intake # 2465185 ( turns out the intake manifold is from a 64 max wedge, it was 7 years ago when i bought them and i never ran the numbers)

What type of intake and exhaust system do you have for these heads ?

yes, they will fit. You don't have to do anything special for them, except like the other question, what intake are you going to use, or what would you like to use?

Dodge didn't use the Max Wedge in 1969.
The 426 Hemi was used in NASCAR with the "bathtub" 4 bbl intake manifold.

If you are thinking 1964 MAX WEDGE, with a 4 bbl intake, then you would be correct.

This is the MAX WEDGE intake that you must have.

They should fit on a 440 block. Might want to double check clearance for the exhaust valve but it should work. If you don't want to run a cross ram then get a Mopar Performance 337 intake. The 337 fits the MW heads and has a cast valley plate to seal up the engine. It is a 4150 style intake so you can run a Holley carb.

440's were not allowed in NASCAR.
They were too large in the cubic inch displacement.
426 was 7 litre displacement, and that was the limit.

Your learning. Lot's of folks on this board will stear you in the right direction with their replys.

No, only the 426 Hemi at NASCAR.
Don't know what you've been reading about that.

Honestly .... I would SELL what you have and buy something with better potential street-manners. A Xram and these heads are not a good street combo ....ESPECIALLY with 5$ a gallon premium fuel.

You could sell JUST THE HEADS ...and buy some nice alum ones ... and still have $$$ left-over to totally complete the project ..

To "clarify" EVEN further, the 440 "std port" type heads were allowed in NASCAR, depending on
length of track, gearing, chassis wedge and stagger rates, etc. The 426 MAX Wedge heads were used
also under the same considerations as above. The 426 MW did see NASCAR action mid '63 to about mid 64' (HEMI's arrival) A 440
block "could" of been used for the 7-litre NASCAR
apps., IF they were "sleeved" to the 4.255 bore size. As said before, the 440 displacement SIZE was not allowed. Max cid size limit was 7-litres or 430 cubes for the "ol' schoolers" AS far as the "winged warriors" their engine sizes
went from 7-litres (426 HEMI) to 5-litre penalty(305 cid-destroked 340 engine/4.04 bore by 2.96 stroke crank), due to wind-cheating advantages of the Daytona and Superbird on the LONGER superspeedways. After 71' the 426's were all of the standard wedge head variety (non MW, they were never made beyond 64'). Check on this!!

Or... hold on to them for a LATER "harder hitting"
strip project!!

What you have are actually '62-3 max wedge heads. The '64 MW used the 518 castings.

Yes they will fit a 440 fine. If they are nice heads with some good recent work done to them .... they should be worth maybe 25 huN.

what fuel do you use on your 440 max wedge 286 heads. I am going to build the same combo. Maybe I could run half pump gas and half 110 octane race fuel? Or will it half to be all race gas. There is a gas station that sells it by my house. But I think it is 7 bucks a gallon.
