727 no 1st gear in D

727 no 1st gear in D - 04/05/11 05:52 AM

In manual low it works fine. Just rebuilt, with the TF-2 vbody kit and bouchillon kickdown. The FSM doesn't have this issue in the troubleshooting, nor does the 727 Handbook (that I could find)
Some help or direction on what to check would be greatly appreciated.

Sprag failure? Were the springs and rollers installed correctly?

If it takes off fine in Low Gear, but seems like its in Neutral when you shift into 2nd or top, it will be the governor on the tail-shaft behind the speedo spline. It will be jammed & not moving outwards with the centrafugal force of revs.
I had this happen years ago.

1-2-3 are fine manual, comes off the line in 2nd gear, then upshifts into 3rd. R works fine.

When you throw it into manual low, the low/reverse band applies in addition to the rear clutch.

In drive, you are reliant on the roller clutch and rear clutch
Sounds to me like the roller clutch isnt holding the reverse drum.

Anyway, you've proven that the rear clutch and low/reverse band work if you have manual low. This also is confirmed since you have reverse.

Sounds to me like the roller clutch is where you're going to find your problem.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. I'm just trying to envision this in my head...that's the picture I have.

No you are correct , but he may have a valvebody issue that is causing it to start in 2nd gear

Oh snap. I was pretty careful putting that thing together, but stuff happens. I'll have to get it torn down and check the sprag. If there's any problem I'll just go with a bolt in unit. Thanks, Steve

If the outer race is NOT spun the std. bolt in is a waste of time and money, it does nothing to correct the potential problem of the rollers rolling over , it's function is to repair a stripped case. The only way to fix the rollers rolling over is with a super or ulitmate sprag .
