carb and cam upgrade... I need thoughts and opinions. - 04/02/11 04:10 PM

Looking to upgrade my 68 Satellite for a more potent carb and cam setup.

Current set-up:
440 bored .30
Eddy 84cc heads w rpm performer intake
600 cfm carb w/ mild comp cam
TTI headers with x pipe
727
3.55 tru trac with 489 casing
torque boxes and frame connectors

looking at MP 509 cam and 750 to 850 carter carb..
trying to get more out of her at the track but still have street manners...

750 3310 basic vac secondary. No opinion on the cam (not a cam guy). What scr? Measured CR?

I agree with the above carb choice . As far as cam, the 509 is a great bracket race cam, old school, and can make great #'s but you give up a little in terms of drivability for a STREET car.
The newer high lift, less duration ( because of aggressive cam ramps)
Make for better street manners while still making good top end numbers.

Comp and Lunati have good offerings

Hello I like the 509 cam ! They make it two ways one is more for racing and the other one is more for the street,I put them in all of my big block Mopar 440 and some 383.I like the Holley 850 DP or six pack set ups ,most all of my iron heads have 214 intake valves and 181 exhaust valves and I run 3" exhaust pipes all the way back with a crossover pipe.also stock HP manifolds.

cam specs are as follows

Big Chrysler 1800-5500 duration224/224 lift.470/.470

What is CR?

The torque converter I believe is 0 meaning there is no stall.

tires at the rear are 295/55/15 MT street drags

I can tell you my weight is 230 but not the cars total weight....

I ran mid 14s at 99 mph with a 2.97 open rear and no tires last year, so I am hoping for a bit more..

If you have a stock torque converter, I wouldn't go any bigger on the cam than what you have. If it were me, i would put in about a 3500 stall and a 750 DP and worry about a cam later. Do you have a Performer or Performer RPM? If just a regular Performer, A swap to an RPM or a Holley Street Dominator would be an improvement. IMO , the biggest gains will come from a carb and coverter change.

I think the Lunati 513 lift with a edellbrook 600 is a nice set up for street or strip!
