Surfacing primer is meant to be block sanded... It's better if it lays out smooth but your gonna be sanding anyway...

A DA sander will make the surface smooth, but it won't level it. You need to block sand. There is no free lunch with body work.

Yup, I'd start with 120-150 dry and get it level again.
You used either the wrong reducer for the temp or the wrong proporation when you mixed it. Got to have a pretty good tip size to spray surfacer, 1.8-2.2 or so.

Thaxx's That's what i was thinking to use a DA to smooth it then follow up with a blocking of #400.

So what will u recommend?your help is greatly appreciated

Re: Surface Primer? - 04/07/11 11:49 PM

To get the body straight your'll need to block it with something courser than 400. I'd block it down dry with some 150-220 and then reprime and see where I'm at before wet sanding with 320-400.

A DA will make a mess unless your really good with it or just want to strip it then whip out the DA.

Do you want quick, or done right? Gotta block it.

It looks normal to me. Take a black spray bomb and mist a light guide coat on. Then start block sanding grasshopper. On your first prime coats, you are going to sand most of it off anyway.

I was told the same thing by a body man with 40 years of it under his belt. Works good.

Spray it with guide coat and start blocking with 180.

^ Exactly, block it and use it as intended to fill the low spots and surface imperfections.Mix more surfacer and add some slow reducer to help the primer flow.It will give a smoother application when you spray. It will also be easier for you to sand with 360 to 500 grit before sealer or paint.final sandpaper grit is dependent on the type of paint to be applied. What brand and type of primer-surfacer are you using?Epoxy,2k urethane,or other?

A few have mention to block with 180.Would that course of a grit be to rough?Or do i need to follow up with say 320-400.Sorry 4 so many ?,but I'm taking time off work to hopefully get this finish all uall help is greatly appreciated

Re: Surface Primer? - 04/08/11 03:11 AM

Nope, it(sandpaper) has to be ruff so it cut's and get's the panel straight, it's the only way. If you go to fine right away, it will never get flat and will be all wavey.

Block sand in a X shape and do it for hours, many. Get your self some durablocks and get busy. I have also used homemade blocks to sand with. It don't have to be Durablocks, but they work so nice.
Guide coat is a must also. Try it, your'll see.

here they are with a heavy guide coat before blocking.

210 hours worth, to this.

Re: Surface Primer? - 04/08/11 03:19 AM

The 180 (or 150) will smooth and level it. Its best to sand the first coat thoroughly with aggressive grit, re-prime and then hit it with 320/400. If you aren't re-priming the work up to 220/320/400... but by then you will be through the first primer.

Re: Surface Primer? - 04/08/11 03:58 AM

I just use a paint mixing stick(a wood one)So block it with 180,then reprime it,and then block it again this time with 320-400.It takes along time but its the right way to do it.If you do the final sanding with wetsanding paper get a rubber squeegee to dry it off between sanding. That way you can see quickly if you missed anything.

Sand and sand again, I go 180. 220, 320, 600 wet, 800 wet.

Then paint and clear, back to sanding 1500 wet, 3000 wet.
