Converter or Cam?

Converter or Cam? - 03/31/11 08:19 AM

Hi all I have posted a few times about cam choices for my barracuda. I still havnt picked one. I have been reconsidering, the bigger cam for a better torque converter.
Anyways the car is 69 barracuda 3400 lbs w/me 360 9.4-1
ported heads iron 2.02 160
M1 singleplane (had it)
comp xe268 cam
750 holley annular boosters,
built 904
11" 2500-2800 stall converter
has 3.55 gears
drag radials

SO I have only enough $$ left to do one of these mods
Voodoo 276, or comp xe275hl
or looking at a 10" turbo action s-800 3500 converter setup tight.
It might be a little much converter for the cam I have now, but at sometime I plan on going with the voodoo 276 anyways.
So should I go converter or cam?
Thanks

I would rather have too much converter than too much cam.

You will have a problem with a 3500 converter and only a 3.55 gear. With that much converter a 3.91 or 4.1 would be needed.

If you swap out to a larger cam in your 360, then you will probably need a larger convertor to match it. If you swap out the 25/2800 converter for a 3500rpm unit, your engine will feel like it has more power. You will get more seat of the pants performance from the converter swap than you will a cam swap in your application.
Note: When I was running the Comp 270H cam in my 340, I swapped out my stock converter (apx 2500) to this TA 10" unit, and the seat of the pants difference was a huge difference and allot more fun to drive.

I have run my TA Tight 10" for six years on my 340. The first three years was with 3:55 gears and a 26" tire. The last 3 years I have run with 3:91 gears and 27" tires. I added a tranny cooler with the converter swap and I have never had any issues with heat or too much converter on the street.

Looking back, I now wished that I would have gone with a tight 9.5" 38-4000 unit.

I will be getting 3.91s in about 4 or 5 months. Waiting for my friend to pull them out of his car.

with 3.91's the convert should work with that cam.

Gears are coming, friend wants to trade my 3.55 for his 3.91s I can wait a few months to save some $$$$$$$!!! What do you guys think about turbo action s-800 11" converter? I found a brand new 2900 stall for $200!!! From what I hear though the 10" 3500 converter is all around a much better converter.

i have run 10" tci which worked ok in street car
but soon as i put it on the strip, it got fatality wounded,
then got a ger 10" which worked real well for me ,it was a 3500,
then i really moved up to a fairbanks 10" 3500, worked alright
my nephew has a 70 challenger, witha 360 tunnel ram
with 410 gear, and a stock converter, and a purple shaft
282 cam , he 60ft a 1.69 at monster mopar ran 13,50
stock converter so much for high dollar converts sometimes,

Ive thought about just keeping this mild converter I have, but I am worried about the snout. Its been hardened, but have heard horror stories about the snouts breaking. From what I was told bt turbo action is there s-800 converters have a chromolly snout. I figure I will be around 350hp ans I plan running 100-150 shot. I dont know if a stock hardened snout would hold up?

Converter for sure.... Then get around to your gear swap.

Then..... forget about the juice cams your currently considering. If you're into this deal as far as 3500 converters and 3.91 gears, then you should be thinking Solid lifter cam at the very least.

I'm confused. Do you have a cam or not? You say you havent picked one but you spec a 268? Do you have a converter?

If you have the cam and converter, put it together and run it. You have a reasonable package already. Then you'll have better info for the next step.

If you don't have the cam, you could step it up and still be fine with the rest of the parts you have.

I guess it does sound confusing! I do have a cam and converter,
xe268 and a 11" 2500-2800 stall converter. Do you guys think a hardened snout will hold up with a 100 shot? I guess I am paranoid about the small snout on the 904 converter.
