Disc Brake Conversion-Caliper Location/mounting.... - 05/18/08 03:45 PM

Going from Drums to Disc on a 66 Sport Fury using the 73 Fury spindles. Currently the steel line (new lines) for the drum brakes are in front of the wheel/spindle assembly and since they are new SS lines I prefer to use them. If I mount the caliper in the stock location (back side of wheel, spindle) the brake hose would have to go behind the spindle to mount to the caliper, which may make it pretty tight using the 73 brake hose. Are there any issues with mounting the caliper to the front side of the wheel/spindle? Does it hurt anything as far as clearance or braking performance? Do I just need to get longer hoses and keep in stock location or just bend new hard lines and start all over? Or is it O.K. to use the stock location for the steel line and caliper and route the 73 hose behind the spindle?

Thanks for any advice or tips.

I've done a lot of brake swaps, but never any on a C body. If you mount the calipers to the front, will they interfere with anything? Sway bar, sway bar links, etc? If they will mount and clear everything,it shouldn't hurt to mount them there. All you have to do is swap spindles side to side.Where the calipers is mounted shouldn't make any difference in braking.Whether it's mounted on the front or rear of a rotor,it's just 2 pads squeezing a rotor to stop the car. If you have any doubts about them clearing while being front mounted, mock them up and set the car back on the floor.......and turn it lock to lock and see if it clears everything. Also be sure the bleeder screws are at the top when you mount the calipers.Good luck

I'm getting ready to do that on my '67 300, and while it looks like it might be tight, I think it will work. However, I AM also getting '73 front hard lines, too.

I'll try to post some pics once they are on.

My 66 Chrysler 300 convertible had 72 C body discs retrofit. I swapped the spindles/calipers side to side (front to back) for sway bar clearance. No problems but it's very important to check the flex brake hose for enough length and binding from lock to lock (left to right) and up and down suspension travel.

Response to this question from C-Body Dry Dock...Great site over there.

I just did the 73 C-body brake swap onto my 68 Drum brake wagon...As long as he is using the proper 73 disc brake flex lines then there wil be no problems.

And yes the hard lines mount in front of the front wheel and the calipers mount on the rear side of the spindle and the flex line runs behind the spindle.

Here is a pisc of my brakes redone...should be the same for his fury...
