318 Fuel pump will not prime

318 Fuel pump will not prime - 03/24/11 02:53 AM

I have a '69 Fury II, 318, all stock, 52K miles.
If the car sits for a day or so, it will not start due to lack of fuel. I know that the carb does leak off fuel.
The visible fuel filter above the pump shows that no fuel is being pumped while on the starter. I have checked the in tank sock, replaced all of the rubber lines, replaced the fuel pump,(twice) and checked for proper venting.
If I prime the carb (dump gas) it will start and the fuel pump will then keep it running. There is never a problem after it is running--no starvation on long hills, so I don't suspect the eccentric.
I realize that if the carb is dry, it will take some cranking to get the bowl full enough to start, but this thing never pumps a drop on the starter.
As a result, this car almost never gets driven, and it's a shame.
I have thought of putting an elecric pump on a switch between the tank and the mechanical pump to prime the mechanical pump just for startups. Would the mech pump pull through an electric pump when the electric pump is off?
Any help appreciated.

You have a leak on the suction side. Its very small and once the prime is lost the cranking speed is not fast enough for the pump to draw fuel.

I considered that a possibility, as well.
I have put the car on the lift and looked very closely for any wet spots that might indicate a leak, but couldn't find anything.
The steel line on the car is still the original, and therefore suspect, but I couldn't see any leakage.
Thanks

b 4 you crank it if you take off the air cleaner will the AP squirt gas? Yes it'll pull fuel thru the elec pump

Test the line. Disconnect from tank and pump. Blow out the line. Plug one end and with a hand vacuum pump see if it will pump up and hold.
Putting an electric is just a bandaid if there is a leak. In time the leak may get worse and the electric may not prime either.

Do the fuel line and get a aftermarket electric pump that requires only hot lead. There are lot out there in the 30-40 dollar range. Frankly I would look at eccentric as they do go bad I know I have had to do 3 over the years

with this very problem I have fixed it both times by replaceing the rusted line

pull it off and slap it on the cement one time to knock the rust loose

i counted over 37 pin holes and stoped counting

I have found a few ecentrics worn with a hole cut thru on the rub area and only moved the pump arm slighty

lots of older carbs tend to leak gas at the core plugs/jet wells in them, they need rebuilt and epoxy to seal them up good

the newer gas does not sit very long before bad and is even harder on the rubber seats/hoses in the system

if you have changed everything else, then I would lay my $ on the pin holes in the main line

after replaceing the line on mine, all the fuel delivery problems I had went away and would then keep the filter 1/2 full at all times and a couple days at a time

good luck

I agree. I had a fuel pump that would suck, but wouldn't hold the vacuum. Comparing the new and old pumps with a vacuum gauge made this very obvious.

Once it's running it has enough oomph to pull fuel through, but not while it's cranking.

set a small can of gas in the eng compartment & hook it to the pump inlet w a piece of 5/16" neoprene fuel line & see if that elim the prob

Ya know on many MANY of these posts I see a shotgun approach.

Do you have a shop manual? There is actually a pretty good diagnostic procedure to troubleshoot the pump.

Do you have a vacuum gauge? Even in this modern age, a test vacuum ga/ fuel pump pressure ga. is just not that expensive.

You need to suspect:

Obstructions in the line/ pickup, including old hose sucking shut, and debri or other problems in the tank/ pickup

Vent problems at the tank

The fore mentioned pinholes in hoses and tubing

A bad pump that cannot pull enough vacuum

Could even be a worn pump cam/ lobe/ pushrod/ arm
