Stainless engine fastners ?? - 03/21/11 09:30 PM

Has anyone used stainless engine fastners and had trouble with stripped or galled threads? I used some years ago on a SB Chevy and never had any trouble but a good friend of mine says they are nothing but trouble.......Any thoughts?

Haven't had problems in the smaller sizes up to 3/8-16, but I use anti-sieze or bolt-prep. I don't use SS in high-torque applications. I pretty much use them in areas where I'm concerned about corrosion, not on the #s (incorrect) or race (weight) stuff.

SS and aluminum react resulting in stuck fastners and galled threads. Anti seize will prevent this as will locktite. Steel bolts are more resistant to this problem but still benefit from at least some oil when going into aluminum.

I have used stainless steel ARP bolts in my LS1 (intake, front drive brackets, engine mounts, headers..) and as mentioned used anti-sieze...no problems or sticking issues at all.
