e body to a body rear end swap - 03/20/11 07:01 PM

Does anyone know if a 8.75 rear end from a 70-74 cuda will fit in a 70-74 duster?or a 68 -74 dart?

Unless you want to run a ton of wheel backspacing, E-body rearends are much too wide for use in A-bodies.

You will spend more money to modify one to work than if you just purchased one from the axle parts for sale section here on moparts. But if you have to hack one up there are plenty out there in trucks and C-body cars. You could sell or trade the E-body one if you have one, then find an a-body one or modify the truck or c-body one. There is some good info in the tech archives here with factory measurements and mods to make them work. And doctordiff has a good supply of parts. If you were closer I'd make you a good deal on a truck housing I have that's just taking up space, along with the 62-70 B-body one. The b-body one is 1" wider at the spring perches compared to the a-body one. And you would still need lots of back spacing on your wheels. But then you would need longer axle shafts for it to work. I found this out the hard way. I purchased the B-body housing and was told it was for and A-body. Installed it in the car along with new A-body axle shafts and couldn't get the car to move. Thought it was the newly rebuilt trans so we pulled it out tore it apart and found nothing wrong. Then realized the axle shafts were to short. So it pays to do some research.

If it's going in a Duster then you can use a B body rear and move the perches. You would need somewhere in the neighborhood of 5.5" backspacing on the wheels. I am doing the exact swap now.

Here is some reading for you.
