4spd Question

4spd Question - 09/13/08 12:22 AM

Are Truck 4 speeds the same as car 4 speeds? I know where one is behind a big block and was interested in it for one of my cars.

Thanks,

No, they are not exactly the same. Is it a granny first gear/top loader 4-speed or an A-833?

The O.D A-833s are very similar between vans/pickups and B/E-bodies, FWIW.

It is in a 77 4X4 pickup, so I assume it has a granny gear. Not really sure.

I have a pickup OD and it looks like it has the same tailstock as a B/E, it has two shifter mounts and they appear to be in the exact location as an E body tailstock. Anyone know if they are a bolt in replacement?

Yes the 833's tranny's are a bolt in replacement for 70 and newer B/E bodies but like pink said the Granny gear 4 speeds are not the same and will not fit.

The bearing retainer size is larger on the OD833's than on the early model non overdrive 833 and more often than not the rear shifter mounting pads are not drilled and tapped. Those are easy fixes.

A/F bodies used a shorter tranny than the trucks/vans.

Uhmm, if memory serves, only the 2wd trucks got the 833 o/d trans(will bolt into a b/e body once you deal with the different bearing retainer size) and the 4x4's got the NV series toploader trans which are not even close to fitting into anything else, nor would you want to use one in a performance build.
