My father and I are building a 413 with a pushbutton 727 for his 58 dodge p/u. I am thinking daily driver with a little grunt. Heads are #406516-1, thinking about putting 440 valves in and hardened seats, nothing fancy. Either those with 9:5:1 comp., or Edelbrock with 10:3:1 comp., running 93 octane pump gas. Thinking about a simple four barrel and 600 edelbrock until we can do fuel injection. I have a mild 2200-2400 stall, 3:55 gears and possi., throw me some ideas!

Go a tad bigger in the carburetion department - 750 cfm, your choice of brand.

The Edelbrock heads will breath better than the 516's. Including mods to the 516's and rebuild cost, the Edelbrock may be less expensive. I'd go edelbrock.

If its a fun truck, CR is about right. If you plan to work it - towing, heavy loads ect. - you might back off a little, say .3-.5 to help make sure you don't have detonation whey its hot and working hard.

The diff in grunt between the 516's and eddys would b night and day. 516's need an experienced porter to get em right and wouldn't come close to the eddys plus all the $$$ that they would need. As said bigger carb and might consider a 440 (external dimentions would b the same for easy hookup of everything) and might consider stroking the 440 block up into the 500's and... I have yet to run across (or speak w) anyone who has built a killer who after the fact has regretted how powerful they built it and in fact just the opposite

Is this a GRUNT or HP moder ?

GRUNT ? .... put together a combo using the "goofy" 413 motorhome heads

Although the 516's can be made to work, they'll never work as well as a set of eddies or even 452/906 iron heads. You might want to find an old Street dominator intake also, they work real nice along with a 750 carb. (I really liked my old 750 AFB on my first 440 in the truck) Try a set of 1-3/4" headers if you're running a low stall convertor, they'll give you better lowend grunt.
One nice thing about that 58' there's a ton of rooom under the hood. A set of B body headers will fit with a couple little adjustments to the frame. My 528 Hemi with a tunnelram fits real nice under the hood of my 60'.

Thanks for all the good advice, I think I will talk him into the eddy heads. It's a fun truck for him, he doesn't want too radical and the 413 is just for the unique value. We are running a four link, independant front and four wheel discs, so it should run and handle well. I really dig that '60 Dodge, very nice! My toy is a '68 Barracuda 10:6:1 stroker (.060 over 360, 420 cubes) with eddy heads, intake, holley 750 and a hughes .560 lift cam, 3,000 stall and 3.91 gears. Dad doesn't want such a radical ride after driving mine!
