225 problem. Need help

225 problem. Need help - 03/14/11 04:58 AM

Ok I have been having issues with my 225.I could not keep the engine running,so I started my quest of replacing part after part to find a cure. What it does exactly is it does not like to stay running, and when put into gear it shuts off. I have replaced the carb ( new, not used), battery, starter,upper/lower manifold gaskets, spark plugs, points and condenser, the list goes on. Well after replacing the points today at .020 and it no longer fires. I turned the rotor a bit to check the gap, but nothing horribly far. Before it at least fired but needed help staying running with giving it gas. Now, it does turn over and tries to start but fails. Any ideas guys? I really really need some pointers here. Oh by the way, does anyone have a picture of a correct carb set up on a slant six? I am 19 and a novice and do not know if I have it hooked up correctly, which could be my problem too.

hi
look to see where dist rotor is pointed and pull dist and check gear on base to confirm condition .

make sure advance weights are free and working properly
install new o ring on dist base and install dist and set dwell without vac advancs hose connected .

set timing .

adjust idle speed and mixture .

see if you have current to the dist when ign on .

is ballest resistor good ?

um as far as the carb goes, I have the air/fuel mixture set at 1 1/2 turns. And idle speed is set fairly good. The Dist was at the 1 O'clock position when I last turned it over. Now I hate to sound to novice, but what is the dwell exactly? And as far as the Timing what would you say is correct? If the two dots are in sync with each other?Sorry i am a learning gear head lol.

timing EDIT take out the #1 plug (forward most one) and bump the starter via the relay w a screwdriver (between large batt stud and brown "sol" wire) tap tap tap until you feel compression building w your thumb over the plug hole then continue to bump it till the timing marks are at 10 BTDC then install the dist so the rotor is under #1 plug wire and the points are JUST starting to open. Have the dist clamped sort of snug & timing light hooked up & start it & set the timing

Did you replace just the points, or condensor too? I once got a bad condensor at Napa - brand new and the car wouldn't start. I re-installed the old one and it fired right up.

Have you checked valve clearance? If the valves are tight it will not want to idle and cause drivability problems. When it is running can you hear the valves clattering a bit, if not check valve clearance. I had an issue with mine and thru parts at it then adjusted the valves and it was a world of difference. I did mine while running and it was as easy as pie!

First off, hit the basics. Do you have fuel flowing? Do you have spark?

You found a NEW, not reman carb for the /6? Didn't think they still made them. I have found, from past experience with /6 carbs, that at least the reman ones are junk. I had an issue with my 225 getting like 8 mpg, turned out the reman carb was jetted way rich. Fortunately, it was a Holley and I was able to buy the correct et for it.

I also helped a guy troubleshoot his /6, wouldn't start. Turned out the carbon core of his coil wire had eroded back, inside the insulation, so far that it would no longer jump the gap and fire the plug, about 1" was missing.

The best way to set points on a /6 is to pull the distributor and set it up on the bench and while you are there make sure the drive gear is there, the guy above had a plastic gear that he fractured trying to "adjust" the "points" on his 77 Ram (he had electronic ignition).

Couple of things to look at.

Also, your original problem sounds like a vacuum leak. If you want help on setting up the carb, tell us what year, make and model too.
