Dual valve spring ? single spring?

Dual valve spring ? single spring? - 03/14/11 02:59 AM

Hi all i am in the middle of my 360 engine build, and am looking at running either a voodoo 60404 or a comp xe275hl. I originally planned on using a comp xe268 but have been thinking about going bigger.
The problem is my heads are already built using comp 901-16 single springs. The comp and voodoo want dual springs. From what I was reading the heads need to be machined for the dual springs. So I was wondering if there are any single springs that are available that will work with either of these cams, so I dont have to pull the heads off????
Thanks

If not do you guys think that the xe274 would work with the 901-16s? they call for dual springs also, but doesnt seem too much more of a cam than the xe268.

I found these while looking over the hughes website.

The cam doesn't care whether you run single springs or dual springs, so long as you have the necessary spring pressure and don't have coil bind. I'm not sure about comp but I know for sure lunati's website tells you how much spring pressure they want instead of only telling you which springs to buy.

Remember there are dual springs and there are single with a damper. 2 different things.
dual springs will require machine work on the heads for the inner spring. single with dampers do not require this.

The specs on the 901's do not match what the other cam wants. It would be best to replace with the correct ones. They also look like a spring and damper set up. You can change springs with out removing the heads.

The coils on a damper spring are flat as in the pictured spring.

The XE268 cam only requires single with damper, That is the cam I put in my 383 a couple of years ago. Or just go to their web site and see which springs they recommend for this cam. I know they call for an installed height of 1.900.

the comp 901-16 single/damper will work with any lunati sb voodoo cam

they are withen 10 lbs of the duel/damper lunati springs that are speced for all the sb mopar cams

i run them on my 360 headed 318 with a lunati voodoo roller cam 60710

258/264
207/213
.485/.458

droped on with stock seals and retainers with heads on engine

been 6200rpms and no valave float with the used stock roller lifters

also run a 360 with a lunati 292/292 bracket master cam with the comp 901-16 with no trouble

built 2 more engines with voodoo cams and the 901-16

Too many people believe that more is better. NOT SO. Too much spring results in problems.

I agree but it seems that there are by far more instances of people that think that more is better than there are that think the other way.

Comp Cams 926-16 are some of the stiffest single springs that they have. I don't know what your installed height is, but was wondering if they might work. You can always get + or - locks and/retainers to make some adjustments.

Normal installed height on SB is 1.65/1.70. Watch the clearance between the seal/guide and retainer too.
