Where to install electric vacuum pump for brake booster

Where to install electric vacuum pump for brake booster - 03/13/11 03:45 AM

The electric vacuum pump for my brake booster I ordered just arrived but I am not sure where to install it. I have a 68 charger. Has anyone ever used one and if so, where have you installed it? Anyone ever ran it all the way to the trunk. I don't see why that would not work? The pump is rather large, around 7 X 7 X 4 so space is tight under the hood. I could possibly mount it between the radiator and grill.

I can't help but advise against trunk mounting. You are looking at a VERY low pressure system, which will be very sensitive to friction losses (in the tube). Make sure whatever hose you use will not collapse.

Incidently, does it have some sort of fitting on the outlet? If so, plumb that into the manifold

I would look at the drivers front fender near the headlight... Or possibly under the battery... Power is close by, Hose to the booster wouldn't be to long... Personally I'd probably bend up a steel line...

Dump the vacuum reservoir under the battery tray and mount it there. Can be tight for running hoses, etc., but there is room. That's where mine is mounted in my '69. Easy to undo except for the drilled holes.

So mount it to the battery tray that way the only holes are in the tray itself which is easily replaced....

I am going to try to mount it under the battery tray. I don't have a stock battery tray. I have a tray that has been welded in to the engine compartment and they way it is in there it will be a tight fit, however, it looks like it will fit. I will post a picture of the install when complete....hopefully later this week.
