picked up a 440....cast or forged crank? - 03/12/11 05:03 PM

Just picked up a 440 short block. Don't have a lot in it, hoping it is a forged crank. Date code is 1970. Stock internals. Id pad has c440 on it. No balancer or waterpump. Any ideas? I don't know how to tell just by looking at it. Any help appreciated. Thanks,
Tommy

You have to pull the oil pan to look at the parting line running longitudinally, front to back, on the crank. Wide margin is forged, narrow is cast.

No telling otherwise. Too much time has gone by since new. Forged crank was new for 440 in 73, 71 for 383. Have bought 72 and older 440's that were serviced with cast cranks.

Tear into it.

assuming that it is the original crank, it's forged. what does the balancer look like, thick & odd shaped or standard thin damper?

Don't you mean Cast?

!970 should be forged but as stated above it certainly could have been changed in the last 41 years.

Even if you do have the original forged crank you still need to determine if it is internally or externally ballanced so that you can install the correct damper and flywheel or converter.

Date code is 1970 and the pad is C440? It can't be, you have mis-read one or the other. C440 is 1967. F440 is 1970.
Either year, if it is the original crank to the block, it's forged.
To check for forged, if the crank is out of the block, tap it with a hammer to see if it rings or look for the wide (1/4"-3/8") parting line

Tap it with a combo wrench, if it rings its forged, if it clunks it cast.

If it has the full depth hole for a pilot bushing it's forged. I have yet to find a BB cast crank with a pilot bushing hole that was drilled to depth. I even took a 400 out of a 75 pickup that had a 4 spd and it was a forged crank. Not saying they aren't out there, but I've looked at a lot of crankshafts and I haven't seen one yet.
Also, if you get the pan off and look the counterweights over good, the cast will look very nice and squared. The forging is rather an ugly piece. And a cast 440 crank will have 440 cast into it on one of the counterweights.
One more thing, unless it's been previously balanced or has six pack rods, it'll be internally balanced.
