05 hemi truck has a shudder after 2nd startup??? - 03/11/11 05:21 PM

we have 84,000 miles on my wifes 05 hemi PU and
when she starts it up and goes to work it is fine but if she stops the truck(like for gas or shopping) and goes again after a few minutes the truck will shutter or buck for about 15 seconds. and now the check engine lite is on.
all we have done to the truck is change the oil and filter every 3,000 mi.
I am sure it will need plugs(how long do the factory plugs last?)

any Idea what might be wrong? thanks in advance. Ron...

These trucks are notorious for bad plug wires. But be prepared, you have 16 of them bad boyz. And 16 plugs of course.

Plugs are standard copper type with recommended replacement at 32k. They will last longer than that but at 60+k its time for plugs. My '06 is coil on plug so wires aren't an issue. Not sure on the '05.

I'd replace the plugs and get the code read - Autozone or others can do it for free. If the code is "misfire" or something like that its probably the plugs.

If the truck shuts down also for no reason, change the Cam and Crank sensor. They are cheaper at the dealer, like 19 bucks instead of 80. It fixed my truck that would shudder and shut down.

my sons friend has a analyzer and is going to check the codes for me monday.

if the plugs should have been changed at 32,000
I guess that at 84,000 that will probably be the problem

Dang, Sounds like I'm due to change my plugs in the 03, I'm up to 104,000 miles....

The high level of reliability of newer cars has many people forgetting to properly maintain them. Yes, the plugs in the 5.7 HEMI motors may last longer than the recommended interval, but changing them is cheap insurance. Pulling plugs from aluminum heads after THREE TIMES THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED MILEAGE isn't smart. The chance of tearing the aluminum threads increases dramatically.
I have a 2007 Ram that developed a shudder that turned out to be a failing lifter to a cylinder controlled my the MDS system. Stuff like that doesnt show up on any code reader. My truck required removal of one cylinder head, removal of one piston and rod, honing of the cylinder and replacement of the dead lifter. That came to $3800. There was no culpability on my part. It was simply a defective part that gave out. The NON Chrysler warranty company tried to deny the claim because I didnt keep accurate oil change records. This was despite the fact that the problem was totally unrelated to the oil.

No scanner needed, just turn the key from off to run three times, leave it in run the third time and the code will show up on the cluster (where the odometer is). You'll see some dotted lines, then the code(s), and then "done".

There are only 8 plug wires. The remaining 8 plugs have the coil sitting right on top of them.

Some of them will miss at 60k, others will go past 100k and run exactly the same, but they're supposed to be changed every 32k as said above.

Good luck with it

Re: 05 hemi truck has a shudder "EDIT" - 03/12/11 11:54 PM

just checked the truck and the dash has 2 codes show up

P 0315 and
P 0300

can anyone tell me what these are Thanks, Ron...

EDIT:
I found this on line
P 0315= NO CRANK SENSOR LEARNED

P 0300= MULTIPLE CYLINDER MISFIRE

so I guess I got my moneys worth out of those plugs

I'll do better maintenance on it from now on
