Yoke change on 741 case

Yoke change on 741 case - 03/10/11 07:11 AM

I would like to change the yolk of my 741 to a large yolk. I'm assuming that since there is no crush sleeve I can just remove the nut and press it off and replace with a new one. Is that correct?

Is the yolk a 741 piece only or will another yolk (742) fit?

SOME 741 pinions are FINE SPLINES. ALL 742 yokes are coarse.

I don't know about the spline difference between 741 and 742, but I can tell you, you may need shims when you swap yokes. I did a couple of months ago -- swapped a yoke off a 3.91 open 741 onto a 4.10 SG 741 and I had to shim it to avoid pulling the pinion too tight into the bearings.

Mike, that can't be, the pinion bearing preload is set buy the shims BETWEEN the outer bearing an the pinion stem , the yoke is nothing more than an extension of the nut , sounds like that 4.10 was not set up right to begin with.

But yes other than the potential spline count difference it's off with the old , on with the new , use red loctite on the threads.
