Anyone using the Kendall GT-1 Oil with liquid Titanium? - 03/06/11 09:34 PM

Like the subject says: Anyone using the Kendall GT-1 Oil with liquid Titanium?
When I was buying some race fuel, the guy at the counter told me they sell this oil and it has "Liquid Titanium"? Is this an actual additive or just marketing?

Sounds almost comical, doesn't it.

I look for Zinc, not titanium. Someone would have to explain to me exactly WHY I would want titanium in my engine. (???)

I'm changing the oil in my solid-flat tappet cammed 451 today, and I'm using the summit partial synthetic 10w-40. @ 4.95 a qt., and 1800 ppm of zinc phosphates, I figure its worth a try. I ran Brad Penn 10w-30 last year, which I've heard is manufactured at the old Kendall plant.

The current Kendall GT-1 is not the original Kendall oil, just the name. The Kendall name was sold twice before being acquired and refined by Conoco-Phillips in Houston,TX.The Brad Penn is still the original GT-1 refined in the old plant in Bradford,PA.

I've seen the ads, but what is "liquid titanium"?
The ads tell you what titanium metal is, but not the additive?

Titanium alkoxide.

Well, you asked...

METHOD FOR MAKING A TITANIUM-CONTAINING LUBRICANT ADDITIVE

AFTON CHEMICAL CORPORATION (Richmond, VA, US) - linked

United States Patent Application 20090318318

Abstract:

"A method for making a titanium-containing lubricant additive, a lubricant additive concentrate made by the method and a lubricating composition containing the additive concentrate. The method includes reacting titanium alkoxide with water in a reaction medium that includes a dispersant to provide a homogeneous titanium-containing additive product. The additive product made by the method is substantially devoid of acidic components."

U.S. Patent pdf. - link

BTW, Sometime soon I'll be changing the oil in my 451-stroker and it won't be with titanium-containing additives. For now, I'll stick with conventional anti-wear additives, e.g. ZDDP.

Thanks for the info/link. I thought this was interesting from their web page:
"Innovative additive technology designed to improve the profitability of companies that sell lubricants and fuels."
I don't know much about the company, but their stock is up 300% since 2009?
