How to Remove 68 Charger Grill - 03/01/11 04:27 PM

Does anyone have instructions on how to remove the grill from a 68 charger? I can't seem to figure out exactly how to remove it. Are there instructions somewhere on the web?
Thanks

?? I just took a good look at mine and started unbolting the thing. I guess you can start by remove the head light doors. Not sure about 68's but the 70 pretty much comes out all in one piece except the doors.

Remove the front bumper and lower splash pan/valance. Unplug the vacuum hoses to the headlight doors and unplug the headlight wiring harness at the connector on the drivers side inner fender. Remove all the bolts that hold the complete metal surround that houses the complete grill assembly and remove the whole assembly as a complete unit. Once the complete assembly is out you can proceed to remove the plastic grill assembly without damaging it unless it is already chipped or cracked. You will not be able to just remove the headlight doors without damaging them with the grill assembly mounted in the car. Trust me, I've done this whole job on my 68 Charger and spent 125+ hours restoring it. Good Luck!

Thanks for the details on removing the grille. Did you have 125+ hours in just the grille?

125 hours???? I'm guess you did a heck of a lot more than a cleaning and re-paint. Here's a not so awsome shot of mine. I removed it, cleaned it, fixed a few cracks, painted it and had back on the car in about 5 hours. Oh and NOOOOOO DO NOT paint it all black.

looks good. removal & replacement of the '68 grille is a PIA. '70's are a lot different.

thanks, I guess on the 68 you have to drop the bumper? DO you have to pull the headlight buckets?

Yes 125 hours spent on just the grill assembly, lots of parts to detail and many hours of masking.

Yes on the bumper and no on the headlight buckets. The headlight buckets are part of the metal grill surround. The 68's also have a seperate headlight bezel bezel that shows only when the headlight doors are open. That's two more parts to spend time on. I was lucky, those bezels were mint on my car and only needed a good cleaning. Lots of 69 owners add those bezels to their cars.

Does anyone know if a grille surround bolt/nut kit is available? I'm looking for the self tappers that attach the Upper (4), Sides (8) and Center Support (2), plus the 4 nuts (presumably with captive washers) that attach the rear of the frame surround to the fenders.

In case anyone is interested, the bolts/nuts just referenced are all those that are needed to be removed (with bumper removed) in order for the grille assembly to be separated from a 68/69 Charger.
