10" Brake Questions

10" Brake Questions - 02/22/11 04:08 AM

I now need to piece together the brakes for my rear end. I have an 8.75 and I plan to run 10x2.5 brake shoes.

I don't have any of the brake hardware on this particular rear end (including no backing plates at this point). But, I do have an A-body 8.75 with the hardware as well as my A-body 7.25 (with 10" shoes) that is currently on the car (68 Barracuda). I know I need drums, shoes, backing plates, and the retaining springs/shafts (that hold the shoes in place). I expect the wheel cylinders will be required as well (but I'm not sure).

But, is there any compatibility between the rest of the hardware - springs, tensioner, etc? Can I reuse the rest from either of the 2 extra rear ends I have? It would make sense given that they are the same diameter.

if the A-body 8 3/4 has the stock axles and 10 x 1 3/4(skinny) brakes

they do not mix with any of the larger brakes

what axle offset do you want to run? what car ?

if you want the large brake with correct axles offset..any 10x2-10x2.5-11x2-11x2.5 brakes set up from any 8 1/4 - 9 1/4 - 8 3/4 will work

maybe some of the spring hardware can be used, but its cheap to buy new hardware kits and a good idea most times IMHO

Let me clarify. I have a B-body 8.75 rear end with no brake setup that will go under a 68 Barracuda. The A-body 8.75 (and the 7.25) are extras. I want to run 10x2.5 brakes.

So, sounds like I'm better off getting new everything. Do they reproduce the bar (not sure what its called) that goes across the middle of the brakes?

Since you don't have the backing plates, go to a swap meet or JY and buy some complete used setups for a few bucks then get new drums, springs, and shoes - easiest way.

Mine (11") came off a 74 van rear, you can find them on many years worth of vehicles.

I assume I can get them off a C-body as well?

Makes me think I should consider 11x3 brakes as well.

I believe so yes - mine are 2.5" which are more than enough for my Duster (Wilwood disks front). I'm sure someone else can chime in with more knowledge.

get a full setup from a JY

I had a 12x3 from a 9 1/4 truck

i run 11x2.5 on my a-body 8 3/4,they are off a 73 newport

any B C D E F J R body will work 8 1/4 9 1/4 8 3/4 9 1/4 D-60/5 lug

Thanks guys.

I have always been in to nothing but A-bodies and the ones I've had have been fairly stock. So, I've not been looking at interchanging. I've got AndyF's Viper disk set up on the front. So, I should be able to put some 11x2.5 or 11x3 brakes on the back and they'll work fairly well.

Does anyone know if the brake levers are the same across all 10" brakes? Or is it specific to the width?
