six pack outboard carb adjustment - 02/18/11 01:25 PM

If you block of an air bleed and the idle increases which way do you turn the base screw. Clockwise or counter clockwise.

if idle increases, that means rich and turn the screw clockwise.

wrong. if the idle increases the idle mix is too lean. back the mixture screws out (counter clockwise) about 3/4 turn from seated for a starting point.

i respectlfully disagree in this instance. if i were adjusting the center carb and the idle increases with turning the screw clockwise then i agree with your statement. the outboard carbs when covering the air bleeds if idle increases, that indicates a rich condition and the adjustment is a clockwise turn. cover the air bleed again and notice any change in rpm. when there is no change the mixture is correct for that engine.

this a is copy from another moparts member that i have found to be very useful.

I have found different articles with different opinions confusing.

Installation and tuning of the six pak induction system by Jerry Binder says the opposite to the above link in the post above.

Which is right which is wrong?

If the rpms change when you block the bleed, that means the bleed passage is clear, so that's good. I have only made minor changes to the outboard baseplate screws on any of my stuff, but it did help after upgrade of cam. (had to turn each of the 4 outboard screws less than half a turn for me) I converted an old mixture adjustment tool, the 45 degree ended kind with knob on top, so that it could get in the 6 pac end carb recesses while on the car! works nice.

If you block the idle air bleed, and the the idle picks up at least momentarily, it is lean. Tune it CC

could you take a picture of the tool you made?

Yes picture of tool would be great.

So has the author got his instructions wrong.
It looks divided on opinions.
Its ineresting some say when idle increases mix is lean others say mix is rich.

I gotta work on that tomorrow. It's probably a K-D tool, possibly 35 years old now.....

Sorry Guys, I apologize,....I flubbed when I typed the air bleed lean/rich technique when I wrote that sentence, should have remembered the old addage when blocking off the air bleed. if it "sounds mean(high RPM) it's lean, if it's ragged (low rpm) it's rich" ......but regardless of the flub, the idea is to try and minimize the rise/fall in RPM when blocking the outer bleed and turning the corresponding base screw to achieve the ideal air/fuel ratio based on rpm readings, again I apologize for that flub

Some items can be a matter of opinion, others are not. This discussion is not. Study and understand carb function, and you will know which is correct.

Plain and simple.

Re: six pack outboard carb adjustment - 02/19/11 05:00 AM

I think what they are trying to say is if you block off an air bleed and the the idle increases then it is a lean condition. When you block off an air bleed you enrichen the mixture so it is lean? I would start with the outboard idle screws out 5/8 turn from seated and go from there. Then tune the outer carb since you can get at the screws with it on the engine and then switch it with the back one and adjust it while running.

Thanks Mike and everyone now i know which way to turn the screw. I hope others have learn't from this thread

No pics yet, but it is a Matco tool with no part#, I swear, and it is about 20 1/2" in total length, small knob on top and straight blade rotating end on opposite end bent at about 55 degree angle. I'll look for a matco catalog for more info.

Re: six pack outboard carb adjustment - 02/20/11 01:55 AM

I just made one out of a coat hanger. Cut it about 22" long, straightened it out & flattened one end like a small screwdriver & bent the other end 90 degees for a little twisting lever. Works just fine.

I have two of the same tools.Mine are SnapOn though. They made them for the 2.2 Mopar carbs and the GM carbs. They were a tight fit. They also adjust a few other tight carbs.I believe they came with 4 different ends.Rocky

part number for the Snap-On?
