Take the side cover off and see if it will engage reverse. If it does smoothly, then you need to have a hard look at the 1/2 lever. It might be binding the reverse lever. I have had some that just wouldn't fit-even pushing the cover up to the limit. Put a different 1/2 lever in the cover and it worked fine.

are you talking about a 1/2 lever that is inside the case? i am new to 4 speeds.

Yes, well technically it's in the side cover. The piece that the shaft of the shift fork goes into. There is a curved relief that the reverse gear arm rides very close to. If these pcs are incompatible, then you will have the issue you have.

Check the adjustment first. 1-2 and 3-4 have to be in neutral or the trans won't go into reverse. Might have to work the clutch a little to get it to go, or roll the vehicle slightly while trying to go into reverse. If you do not have the proper tool to lock the shifter in neutral you can make one from 1/4" round stock bent in the shape of an allen key.

....also you might just try to disconnect the reverse rod from the shifter end, and see if the shifter can detent into the reverse position,....I once purchased a complete E body 4spd set-up from it's owner who removed it thinking the tranny was bad,...he swapped over to an automatic he was so distraught trying to solve the reverse engagement problem he was trying to troubleshoot,....turns out the thin shim plates located between each shifter lever, that allow the shifter plates to slide on each other was loose and bound it self up between the 1st/2nd and reverse shifter plate not allowing the reverse shifter lever to slide independant of the other shifter levers,...basically binding just the reverse shift position

You need to make sure all gears are in neutral..
When they are the Hurst shifter lever will move smoothly left to right..
When the gears are all in neutral the shift arms should line up, some Hurst shifters have a hole that you can put a drill bit through. Next adjust the shift arms if needed when in neutral, if all is well then putting into reverse is EZ move the lever to the left and up..

Just my $0.02..

trying to move reverse tab on transmission in to "gear" with rod entirely disconnected. only moves about an inch.

You have to be 100% sure that the 1/2 and 3/4 shift levers are in their neutral position, even the slightest load on one of their levers from the shifter being not being adjusted properly will/might prevent you from engaging reverse,.....are you famaliar with the adjustment procedure?

Just a quick question,...are all 3 arm levers, esp the reverse shift arm located on the transmission, have all their shifter rod button holes facing up/vertical?....in other words, are all the shift arms located on the tranny facing the same installed direction?...up

Well you have a good source listed for the set-up procedure, and if you feel it was performed properly, ...Make sure the shifter can detent properly into reverse without the reverse rod attached,...if the shifter checks out fine,...your gonna have to open the side case to investigate further as to what is preventing the reverse from engageing

You can rule out the shifter adjustment by disconnecting all the shifter rods from the trans. Make sure 1-2 and 3-4 are definitely in neutral - work the levers bolted to the side of the case til they are in neutral. Then try to manually put the trans into reverse using the bolted on lever. If it doesn't go try spinning the trans output shaft a little. If it goes into reverse you know you have a shifter adjustment problem, if not, then it's inside the trans.

how to spin the input shaft while in car? ...turn it over or run engine with clutch out in neutral?

Hey all. I had the same problem. The first and second shifter fork needs turned around. The reverve lever is hiting the trans fork thats why one is different than the other.

THANKS FOR THE INFO GUYS. I WILL TAKE IT TO THE TRANSMISSION GUY AND TELL HIM YOUR IDEAS. I AM AFRAID THAT IF I GET IN THERE MYSELF, I MIGHT JACK IT UP.

From your desceiption it seems to me that your cover is not aligned properly. The clearance between the 1/2 and reverse is too close causing a binding. Before you take it to a shop try this. Loosen the cover bolts and put the trans in reverse--this will set the clearance --with the trans in reverse retighten the cover bolts .

This sounds like what it is...

There is a step that is easy overlooked in the manual that you install one bolt in the cover; shift it into reverse and adjust the cover until a slight drag is felt in the revers lever...

I agree with the others, take the rods off and shift each rod one by one and make sure they engage w/o the shifter

again, loosening all bolts and readjusting cover did not work. also, if not clear, i tried to get it into reverse with all levers removed. it is just simply not going into reverse. gotta be inside tranny.

ok...was going to haul to shop today, but he is not available.
I am 100% certain this is not a shifter or linkage rod issue .

"The first and second shifter fork needs turned around."

Is this "fork" inside the case?

thanks.

got r did. cover was misaligned. made sure to loosen all bolts AND 1/2 and 3/4 rod nuts. I think I had a little more patience this go around since I wasn't laying on ice in 30 degree weather. thanks for the help.
