Anyone have detailed pics of E-body rear window louvers

Anyone have detailed pics of E-body rear window louvers - 05/15/08 07:40 AM

I have a set of Gean Gregory rear window louvers for the Cuda. I also picked up a set of the hinge gaskets, rivnuts and correct polished pin hardware (should have came with them from the beginning ).

Any pointers on setting them right?

any close-up pics of the pin locations and hinge mounting?

How do I exactly install the rubber edging and rubber pads on the louvers? You'd think he would have supplied some instructions. Beautiful louvers, just lacking some parts and instructions.

Many thanks in advance!

I sure hope someone helps you out. I tried getting installation advice a couple of months ago. The "advice" I got was to center them over the rear window and start drilling holes! I haven't installed them yet thinking I'll stumble across some specific measurements etc. on the placement of these things. I would think the factory had some installation instructions (I was told ALL louvers were installed at the dealer once the car arrived there). I hate to just start drilling holes..........

Thanks for your letting me know.

I cannot believe NO ONE has pics or real good suggestions

Looks I lwill have to discover on my own like I mostly do with most of my cars.

If that's true then there probably were instructions included with the original louvers, but the dealerships discarded them. Also, the dealerships in general weren't very good at following the instructions and seem to have often discarded them before starting the project. This results in measurement variations from car to car when comparing originals. I suggest this because that is the situation with challenger front spoilers. Luckily someone found a copy of the cuda front spoiler instructions, but many dealer installed instructions are missing in action.

Hey Beepbeep!

Thanks for the close-up pics! Much appreciated
That gives me a better idea of the positioning of the pins.
I'll post pics of mine once I get done installing them

Do not assume that the vinyl top is straight, you want to center the louvers to the window and the centerline of the car not the seams on the top.

Good advice!

Rear window louver cars were supposed to have black window trim. would that just be black paint, or is it something special?

It is actually a textured moulding...Here's a few pics... ... ... ...The moulding has the grain stamped into the metal{aluminum?} and is much more delicate to get into place without bending/warping the pieces...

Colin,

I LOVE your 'Cuda
Your car and wheels still has me thinking 'ole skool for my next project which I had 18's in mind for....

As for the louvers, I have finished installing them. I know, not vinyl top car but still look great IMHO.
A bit tricky and did it with the help of a good friend.
-We first found the true centerline of the backglass.
-Then true centerline of the louvers.
-Placed the louvers on the car lining both centerlines and mark the rear filler panel where the polished pics would be. We figured since the pins have to be dead center of the flat spot on the filler panel, it would make an excellent starting point for the louvers.
-After we drilled the pin holes in the filler panel, we installed the louvers with the pins pinned
-Next using an automatic centerpunch, we made our marks where the two upper holes for each louver hinge would be.
-Pilot drilled those holes and opened them up to 19/64" and installed RestoRick's (Thanks Rick ) OE type rivnuts, only after tapping down slightly the reinforcement panel below the skin to allow the rivnuts to sit flush properly before squeezing the gun.
-when we were done with the four upper hinge mounting holes, we bolte dthe louvers on and centerpunched the 3rd mouting nut on each hinge and installed a rivnut on each one.

a couple of comments regarding Gean Gregory's louvers.
The louver's themselves are beautiful, however, what is lacking is some quality hardware. the screws he supplied for the upper hinges are WAY too long. They would probably go through the headliner if I used them.
The posts/pins he supplies are a generic black coated pin which are horrible looking and do not even include gaskets. The hinges also did not come with the proper rubber gaskets. Had to get those and the proper pins from Jack's Auto parts (Thanks Jim!).
The 4 pieces of rubber supplied to prevent the louvers from rubbing against the glass do not even hold onto the louvers
Other than the hardware and missing parts, the louvers were great

Thanks everyone for trying to help me out.

HEre's a pic I took quickly after install, I'll have some better ones next time.

I've never seen that before, should both Cuda and Challengers have this molding?

Holy Cow Gil !! ...That car looks fantastic with the louvers on there !!! I can see why you added them...Great job on a beautiful car... You're not the first one I've heard about going after the better quality accessories for those louvers...
cntx, I'm not sure if the chally had it's own version of the textured moulding...As for the cuda..Not all the louver equiped cars ended up with the textured moulding...On that note, the 70 Gran Coupe recieved the textured moulding if it was ordered with a Black vinyl top...

I personally parted a '70 340 4-spd 'Cuda a long time ago that was a factory J68 louver car and it had the standard chrome backlight molding

Re: Anyone have detailed pics of E-body rear window louvers - 05/21/08 11:26 PM

Now I need to figure out how to scan a pic of the car in the junkyard circa 1992 Probably one of the cleanest original paint parts cars ever!!! I got there after Chet G. had already torched the 4-spd hump out and a big section of the torsion bar X-member in doing so Car was junked and deemed a parts car, thanks to an aftermarket sunroof

You got that right!!! I wonder if a Moparts member ended up with the 'Cuda? It was in Worchester, MA in the back of a body shop, a guy named Wayne owned the place, lots of Mopars died back there

Sorry to get off of the original topic

What should the finish be on the hinge screws?

Thanks,

Hey Rick,

Thanks for them Rivnuts, worked perfectly on both the louver hinge mounts and side mirrors

As for the correct finish for the louver screws, dunno... I just used stainless screws for longevity since the car is not restored to original.
What did you use on "El Hemi's" hinges?

Re: Anyone have detailed pics of E-body rear window lou - 05/22/08 07:39 PM

The stock ones his dad used when they put it on.
They appeared to be a painted black, but beepbeep's
picture looked like the upper ones could've been black zinc.

I'm close to offering louvers. They will be complete with pins, correct screws, hinges, gaskets, glass insulator pcs, edge gasket, etc. I have some samples coming soon.

RIck,

I wish I would have known, I would have waited to see your louvers which I am sure will be outstanding.
I bought Gean's knowing I would not get gaskets, correct hardware, etc...

Don't put them on....they look terrible on Cudas!
Ruins the smooth body lines.

Did the textured molding only come on the louver cars with vinyl tops, and louver cars without vinyl got the bright molding maybe?

Did all louvers cars from the factory also had a vynil top, or could you order louvers without a vynil top?

Re: Anyone have detailed pics of E-body rear window louvers - 03/31/11 05:50 PM

Absolutely you could order louvers without a vinyl top... There was a note in the salemens pocket guide that confused the issue.. What it was intended to mean is if a vinyl top was ordered the top had to be black... The only car I know of locally coded for louvers is a FY1 T/.A without a vinyl top..

No textured mouldings for Challengers, No black moulding either...

The textured mouldings came on most Cuda's with louvers but not all, the textured mouldings also came on most Gran Coupe Cuda's/Barracuda's but not all.... About as clear as mud huh?
