MSD Billet "Ready to use" or MSD w/ 6AL? - 09/07/08 08:15 PM

Hello,
I run the billet w/ vacuum advance and 6AL on my 67 Vette and was thinking about putting an MSD system on my R/T 440. It is mild and would want to keep the vacuume advance.. Anyone have experience w/ the ready to use unit??
Thanks, Pete

I used the Pertronix billet "plug and play" distributor.. I had to grind some material off of my stock 915 heads, as the distributor base is bigger diameter than stock.. Seems to run fine out of the box, but I am sure tweaking would result in more horsepower.....

The correct name is Ready To Run. I run it. Very nice distributor. Multiple ways to tune it. Well worth the price in my opinion.

Does this distributor wire in without the standard Mopar ecu control module? Also did you use a blast resister with yours? I started a post yesturday about a "plug and play" distributor I found on ebay and was wondering if they were any good. The particular dist I found used a gm type module, but wired in simply with a 12v hot wire and I assume a ground. I'm not real fond of gm modules, I think they are worse than the Mopar modules, but I'm looking for inexpensive simplicity for my 440. Don't mean to hi-jack this thread, just asking a related question. Thanks.

My 65 Coronet doesn't have a ECU control module, they didn't have 'em. It's a simple hookup, real simple. Instructions are very clear for early or late model Mopars. MSD should have online instructions to help you understand better.

Cool. Thanks for clearing that up. I checked with Summit to see what an MSD Ready-to-Run distributor would cost... http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku . Yeah, $400 is a bit much for me. What would be your opinion of this distributor? It's kind of a "Ready-to-Run" type also, just hook up two wires and go, no module or ballast resister needed. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts-Acc...d=p4506.c0.m245 Is this any good?

BTW...I love your Coronet! Reminds me of my old 65 Coronet 500. Originally had a 318 poly but I swapped in a 383 auto. Good times!

All I can say is that it's a top of the line billet distributor, easy to tune with how much and when the timing works with vacuum advance too. Puts out a hot spark like the 6AL does. Ya don't need the box though. The only thing it doesn't have is multi spark. But it's a sweet piece. You'll want a hot coil to go with it.

Thanks for the compliment on my Coronet.

Can't tell ya yet. Bought one for Dad's Dart a while back. It's the small block one, though.

If you're running a distirbutor with an external coil, you need to run a ballast ressitor for that coil. Ballast resistor has nothing to do with the distributor itself, the ballast knocks down the amount of voltage going to the coil. The coil doesn't care what kind of distributor/ignition system is telling it to fire.

JD340 I have been runnig the Procomp distributor you show on my 360 for quite awhile now. I used the recommended Procomp coil. It works very well !
