Updating/modernizing bench seats

Updating/modernizing bench seats - 01/25/11 11:28 PM

I've been doing a little planning on the Imperial. I can't work on the car yet because I still need to finish the hot rod.
The seats need to be rebuilt with new foam and covers. It's got the split bench seat that held you like the recliner in your living room.

Can these things be bolstered to look somewhat original and still offer support for mild cornering? I'm not looking for a racing seat but don't want to slide across the car when I take an exit ramp.

Here's a pic of the same seats. linky to large-by-huge interior pic

I need to go through the front and rear seats. It would be possible to make them match each other but I don't want to make them look out of place with a stock interior.

With an Imperial, "mild cornering" is about all you get. If you want the "look" of an Imperial, you'll have to get the original seats redone by a GOOD upholserer, and by that, I mean find a real good hotrod maker in your area and ask who they use. Then, just install a 3-point seatbelt in place of the original lap-belt. Otherwise, you will have to live with a non-Imperial look. JMO.

just install 5 point harnesses...that'll keep you in place

or put one of those pads designed for putting a jute-backed rug on top of wood floors between you and the seat, and wear leather pants.

Instead of asking here, maybe you should try a furniture forum....that front seat looks like a living room couch

If not...maybe try to sort of scallop the seat to give a little bit of support...Chevy had some truck bench seats that sort of did it...we did a few in Oz and had the trim guy we use make the scallops abit more pronounced and wasn't too bad. But with all that padding on your seats, going to make it hard.

I wonder how many Tostitos can get lost between the cushions? Maybe I'll find an LS powered one in there when I clean the interior.

That's what I was thinking about. Maybe a harder foam insert around each side of the butt as well as the torso. It would look stock or really close to it but still offer more support.

Roger, I'll be doing suspenion work to stop the ocean motion. I don't plan on outrunning a Lotus Elise in the twisties but I do expect a modern level of handling.
