E-Body Slapstick - 01/25/11 02:51 AM

Hello, any tips for the adjustment procedure for a 70 Challenger? My issue is when using it in slapstick mode I can't get it to lock into first. When I do put it in first, it shift to second when it normally would, then I can use the slapstick as intended from 2nd to 3rd. I also notice that the shift indicator marker reads on the bottom of each letter rather than the middle. In Drive, the indicator is pretty well centered, but in 2nd and 1st it almost looks like an underline.

I've been through this with slapsticks myself. Loosen the small bolt that clamps the small metal "box" on the arm that attaches then to the trans lever. Push the trans manually (while under the car) into 1st. Put your slap stick in first, then tighten the bolt on the "box". Make sure that you are in the middle of the gear you selected. Next, test in "Park" to see if it is engaged there. Try running through the gears with out running. If not working quite right, try the above procedure in "Drive"

Thanks for the help! I found this pic of what you're talking about. I take it I should leave the car in first when I begin this procedure then try and center it with that nut. And I'm guessing that nut is on the bottom of that box the "swivel arrow is pointing at?

That swivel is the "box" I am talking about. I would first losen it it then find first gear under the car then with the slapstick.

Also, you may have found the car did not shift correctly because the trans was between gears at times. That can cause problems if you continued driving it that way.

When your under the car, make sure to check for a worn bushing on the trans bracket. On my car, the pivot that goes through the floor was worn where it turns in the trans bushing. I had to weld up the worn spot and grind it smooth.(the bushing was also ovaled out)

The car wouldn't fully engage PARK and would roll back before it would engage. A worn bushing may also explain your issue.

Thanks guys. I'll check that all out.

BTW, it does shift perfectly when in drive. It just never clicks in 1st when I move the lever there manually and it naturally progresses to 2nd as if that's the gear I put it in.

It definatly needs to be adjusted. That's probably your only issue. However, all the adjusting in the world won't help worn out linkage. Make sure the linkage is tight and then adjust. I'm sure your problem will go away.

Thanks! Now I just need the motivation to jack that car up.

Just a quick note to say thanks! It's back to working like a champ. What ended up working for me was disengaging the swivel, putting the car in Reverse from underneath and on top, then tightening. When I tried the procedure in either Park or Low 1 I had a lot of slop. Anyway, thanks again guys!
