Lunati or Comp hydraulic cam for a 440

Lunati or Comp hydraulic cam for a 440 - 01/25/11 12:32 AM

I'm trying to decide on which cam to buy for a 440-6 restoration, and I'm struggling a little. I've never had a cam failure with Mopar Performance cams and have used quite a few of them, but I'm thinking about going with a Voodoo or Xtreme energy cam this time. The thing that's in the back of my mind is that it seems like a lot of people have said they've had failures with Comp Cams camshafts. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the Lunati cams hold up better these days than the Comp cams do? Does anyone know if there's a difference between these Mopar Performance six pack cams 4529270 & 4529270AB? Thanks

I think I'd go with a Hughes cam if I was going hydraulic.

I guess it depends on your build. if you are just looking for a little more than the factory The Summit 488 cam is a good grind. If you'd like more and want to go up on the gear, add headers and stall One of those other cams or a custom grind would be good. I ran the MP 528 solid w/ a 6-pack and it pulled real nice w/ a 2800 stall and 3.91's

It's being restored back to pretty much stone stock 10.5:1 4-speed with 3.54 gears and manifolds. If I went with more cam than original, it's not going to be a lot bigger.

If it is a restoration style build I would go with the 268H and put Brad Penn oil in it.
Break in the cam (30w) using varible rpms, change out the oil and filter and

I used a Crower cam in my 440/6 ( I think its 32242 )and I use stock rockers and a lil better spring. It has 222@.050 and 234 @.050 duration and .486/.495 lift . A great cam with a ton of power and good with stock manifolds due to its wider 112 lsa. Another great cam I used on a friends sixpack car is the Mr Sixpack cam. BTW ,do you really have 10.5 compression ??? I think you would have to deck the block and mill a bit off the heads and use a steel shim (oem)head gasket to get it that high. My sixpack block had the oem pistons about .020 down .

If you want the right cam, get with Dwayne Porter......Not Hughes....

I put in new Comp XE268, Comp lifters and Comp adjustable rockers- The Comp lifters were junk out the box, the tolerances were too tight in the lifter bores and the plungers stuck on 3 of them and ruined 3 pushrods and the adjustors on top of the rockers. When I called Comp their customer service guy was a flaming condescending ***hole- said the only way it could have done it was by me racing during the break-in period and floated the valves , wouldn't stand behind their stuff at all...I ended up running Rhoades lifters, and learned you can change out a complete set of lifters by snaking them out the distributor hole with a magnet- without pulling the intake
