C-body front disc brakes?

C-body front disc brakes? - 01/08/11 09:28 PM

What was the first year single piston disc brakes were available on C-bodies?

Do these parts interchange with '70-'72 C-body disc brakes?

should be 69 I think.

The rotors are 2 piece till 72, and should be the same.
calipers too, till the change in 73, though honestly I am not sure if the 73 caliper is different. I know the spindle and rotor are different in 73 only. That is the 73 rotors do not work on 72 and back spindles, and vice versa. Even though they bolt up to the suspension the same.

The spindles bolt up from 65-73, with the exception of the budd disc to 68. The exception there is supposed to be the lower ball joint is different for the budd disc vs the drum and later disc ball joint.
Though there was some debate on this, no one really had both side by side to verify and it is too expensive to get any lower ball joint for a cbody let alone the budd discs to verify.

Thanks for the information.

I just had a batch of spindle sleeves machined, so the readily available '73 C-body/'75 pickup rotors will work with the earlier C-body knuckles.

I have a complete BUDD disc brake system off a 69 Imperial in my storage locker.
I took some pictures back in 2008 when i cleaned everything up.
I will post some pictures what those BUDD spindles, and ball joint, tie rod, arms look like.
Maybe it might be of interest to you guys.
That old Chinese phrase, "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Yup, they were pin-type.

Year range Rotor dia. Rotor Thickness Caliper type Eff. Piston area, in2
1966-’68 11.87" 0.875" Fixed 8.85
1969-‘73* 11.75 1.125 Pin 5.93
1974-‘78 11.75 1.25 Slider 7.54

* - note that 1973 (and some late ‘72s) uses a one-pc. rotor and requires a unique knuckle (or the new Dr. Diff adapter sleeve)

Don't let me find our address.....

I've got a set on my 67 and I'm dreading when it comes time to seriously working on the front brakes. Or ball joints.

Those BUDD calipers are extremely expensive to try and rebuild.
Everyone that has them feels your pain.
These BUDD calipers would need the full treatment.
The piston bores are pitted, so they would need to be resleaved, the pistons are all corroded away, and reproduction kits from a restoration brake shop that i found in Florida, are very pricey for pieces of rubber.
When it comes time for you to get into your brakes, check out calipersonline.

I don't know about rotor and/or spindle interchanges , but I thought 1969 was still using the 4 piston caliper and 1970 was the 1st year for the single piston caliper

Remanufactured calipers aren't that bad. From what I've seen Cardone's are coming down in price recently. My biggest concern is rotors and ball joints.

Imperials used the Budd disc brakes up till 1969
C bodys used the Budd's up until 1968

Those are some serious spindles! I haven't looked at mine yet. The Imperial is waiting patiently for the hot rod to be done.

You would hate me even MORE!
I just tossed a GOOD Budd setup about a year ago, couldn't find anybody to GIVE them away to!

I might have a few C body single piston brake parts/pieces around if somebody local wants them... but I'm tossing stuff like crazy. Flip-a-coin Gary has got a lot of donations...

Actually late 72 models had the 73 parts

You should find it in the kindness of your heart to send me the hubs.
I'm looking for a pair to modify for a big brake conversion.
