70 340 challenger headers recommendation - 09/05/08 01:16 AM

looking to get some ideas about headers as opposed to hipo xhaust manifolds for a 70 challenger 4 speed with a stock 2 1/4 exhaust .030 over, edelbrock rpm intake, holley 650, 78' 360 heads with mild port and valve work and decked, mild cam, balanced and blueprinted, 10.75:1 compression 3:23 sure grip.

any thoughts ?

Best fitting would be TTI without a doubt. But hang on to your pocketbook because it will hurt. I have a 340 Cuda and it only took me about an hour to put both sides on.

i have hooker competion on my car 1 5/8.

passenger side fits great.

drivers sides is another store the ground clearance is horriable about 2 1/2 to 3 inchs below the k-frame. The tubes on top run directly across the last to plugs 5 and 7. makes for getting the right wire ends interesting.

clears power steering by a mile.

TTi i have seen on other challengers look to be a much better fit but like said alot of money.

Dougs headers i was looking at on a challenger look to the naked eye alot better of a fit.

Doug's for me, fit very well with good ground clearance.

72:
I have not thought of Dougs. Is this the set that you bought?
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku
Is the Dougs a below the steering ling or above the steering lnk set?
Any install issues?

$540 is much more tolerable than the current $720 for the TTi's. Has anyone had any issues with the Dougs 340 headers?

Yes those are them, I got them on AMAZON.com for 475 bucks a while back. They show up on there every once in a while.

They are completely above the steering link. Didn't have to jack up the motor or even take out the spark plugs to get them in from below.

They fit fine with the 727 trans even though the instructions/footnotes say they don't. I have the MP mini starter.

Here are some picts of my 70 340 Cuda with TTI's. I would say comparing the picts between TTI's and Doug's I would save the $200 bucks and go with Doug's.

Also my exhaust is 3" from headers back.

This is a very good post to show the differences between the Dougs and the TTi small block headers.
Nice job guys!!

Anyone: Is there any power/torque differences between step headers and straight tube headers?
I am trying to see the difference in the price of these headers and since they both fit the SB/727/Challenger combo so well, what am I not seing to make the price so different especially when both headers are ceramic coated.

Does the Dougs come with header reducers for 2-1/4" head pipes? I looked on their sight and it just said they come with the reducers. Do they have the bung welded on?

Thanks

This is a good thread...

I have a 360 in my challenger, with Hooker Super Comps on it.

I bought them for $75 at a swap meet, but I think the 1 3/4 inch primaries are a little big for my motor, and they don't drag on the street, but they drag real bad when I load the car up on my trailer.

I am seriously considering TTIs, I think the Step really helps for applications over 450 HP, but that is just my opinion.

PS- I don't currently have over 450 HP, but ported Eheads and a 408 kit may be in the future...

The dougs came with 2.5" reducers. They only are 1 5/8 tubes. Seem to work well on my SB stroker, I'm sure the tti's would be better but the Dougs seem good to me. And they stay above the steering.LOL

Do you have any shots of the routing around the steering linkage area? I know you said it went over, but I can't visualize it.

Thx

I have a shot above of around the starter, that is the center link in the shot. Also the engine on the stand as well.

Here you go, these are for the TTI's. The first two are the drivers side, don't let the pictures fool you, there is a bunch of clearance between the header pipes and steering linkage. The third picture is of the passenger side. These were the best picts I could take in a cramped garage.

They are nice, but as you say about $800 in the door. My only concern, it seems like the passenger side, may be restricted too much by how quick they turn down out of the head.

all the pics and responses are a big help , I didn't notice anyone with a 4 speed trans, would that have any clearance issues? i think the doug headers from summit would suit me fine, still hanging on though if someone has a set of hipo 340 manifolds for sale

Re: 70 340 challenger headers recommendation - 09/11/08 03:17 AM

My car (TTI picts) is a 4-speed car and no clearance issues.
