New HEMI engine management options?

New HEMI engine management options? - 05/08/08 06:53 PM

whats out there besides the factory, and what MP offers?

can any of them actually retain mds? or perhaps link or control the auto?

what about the dual spark plugs, do they fire at the same time? or are they timed different?

FAST provides a complete EFI kit that plugs into your factory sensors. This includes the XFI ECU as well as the XIM module which is required for the ignition. The kit also includes a replacement 90 mm throttle body that is cable driven since "fly by wire" is not supported. MDS is also not supported.

The 5.7 kit controls the coils same as the factory (waste spark for the extra plug). The 6.1 kit removes the 16 plug requirement.

The system can control the auto trans too.

Jeeesh that sounds pricey!

let me re-phrase.

does anyone know if mega squirt or something similar can control it?

I just can't see spending $3000 for engine management.

XV motorsports can set up up with a carb, intake controller and harness basic kit ready to go for under $1500

thats kind of going backwards.

Does anyone one know if the stock ECU can be hacked?

yes dave at B&G chrysler and i think sct has something coming out. i wouldnt see why you would need this, unless it is a boosted engine or is making well over 500hp. just my opinion... why do you want to run aftermarket efi?

I don't want to run after market if I I don't have to , but the drive by wire needs to go!

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/09/08 01:01 AM

why does the drive by wire have to go...is it because of the huge lag everybody complains about...
if u cannot make your own harness, chris squire sells one for about 1k and a flashed ecm can be had for about 300 or so...starts and runs like it is a brand new car

Or you could jsut save boatlaods of money and build a normal engine for the car that has its own timing control (distributor), and a throttle cable and a lot more torque and less brittle parts.
I work for chrysler, and I was trained on how the new hemis are built and have seen them apart etc. There is no way I would pay more than a real motor and put one of those in an old mopar and beat on it. PLUS if you ever broke it youd be spending lots of money to get any replacement parts.

or could you could build the same thing everybody else has...let someone do something outside the box.

plus a new hemi, a retrofit harness, and ecm can be had for about 3500.

you might be able to save money, just depends what you already have available.

plus how often are you seeing 300s/magnums/chargers with any internal problems. your occassional valve spring broke and the rod knock on the srt's and thats about it.

i so go for it...

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/09/08 01:41 AM

I asked for 2 reasons.

1) my dakota's 5.2 is getting tired with 170K on it, and I would like something newer, and the 5 speed auto for it.... to perhaps gain more power and a lil more mileage.

2) I have a Rx7... and I thought it'd be neat to swap a HEMI in it, instead of the usual SBC or LS1.....

So if a management system could be had fairly cheap, or hack the factory one to use a normal TB, then I'd do it.

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/09/08 01:58 AM

well the main shopping around you could do is for the engine. i actually know of one in columbus ohio for 1800$ a couple weeks ago. about the same price as heads, intake, and carb, for a small block. the harness is about 1k and ecm about 300 or 400. i stayed away from the fast or mopar set up because it is so much more additional cost. if u have any questions i would be more than happy to help. if u ran it in the dakota you would save a ton of money on the fuel system if it is port efi (later magnum). i would love to do that swap too..the wiring really isnt that bad that either
Posted By: BlakDak

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/09/08 02:42 AM

it is a magnum, I refer to the magnums as 5.2's and LA's as 318's

I guess the engine I am after is tons cheaper, its $1750 engine, trans, harness, and ECU.

I ran across an adapter plate to put a GM throttle body on one. So if the ECU can be hacked to recognize that, and not throw codes, I see that as half the battle.

As far as the Rx7 swap goes, the trans computer won't be a problem as I'll probably run a T56 behind it, if I can find a bell housing to do it.

I noticed one manufacturer had them, but also had 2 different bell's one for a LSx t-56, and another for a Viper T-56... which confused me.

I'd like to do the stock ECU if I could hack it, and retain the MDS..... as I think it would help with mileage on the truck.

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/09/08 06:21 PM

I was looking at summit, they showed the FAST set up with internal data logging for $1800

They didn't have a price for the HEMI setup listed on fast's site.

#301013

They have a picture of it on their site, but it shows 2 box's.

I am assuming one for ingition, and one for fuel?

how did I miss this..... and how does it control the auto, or does it need a 3rd box?

Yes. Or two relays.
It's simple

Summit sells the 301003 (not 301013) for $1800. Its the ECU only and the internal datalogging is only helpful for a racer. As long as you can take your lap top with you you don't need the internal datalogging function.
BTW: I sell 301003 for $1700

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/09/08 10:54 PM

i sell one or two differant systems that work with the 5.7/6.1 motors also.

the stock pcm can be tuned also to match your needs.
we have done over 100 of them like that already at least...maybe more

So you guys are finding complete 5.7 or 6.1 HEMIs with the trans and computer etc for $1800 ????

I've been watching for one for 6 months and all the ones I've come across are around $6k.....

I must be missing something...

The $1600 is just for the ECU. The entire conversion kit with the XFI ECU and the XIM module, all harnesses, sensors, replacement 90 mm throttle body (cable driven), etc is $3100. But nothing near $6K. ... Prices have just come down lately.

The 5.7 arent that hard to find for a reasonable price....if you can find me a complete 6.1 for $1800 I would be suprised but glad to be dead wrong

Gdemon....what did you pay for your 6.1 ??

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/13/08 09:12 PM

I've seen quite a few take out 6.1's in the 4-5k range, some are higher but most are in that range, this doesn't include the trans or wiring, just the motor.

anyone have web links to a project where a MegaSquirt open source EFI system
was put on a 5.7 Hemi V8,
or perhaps to a 5.2/5.9 Magnum V8 ?

Or a Haltech?

Or a Motec?

Re: New HEMI engine management options? - 05/31/08 03:33 PM

I recently bought the below 1938 Plymouth business coupe. I have gone back and forth but decided to build what I would call a driver and something that can run the power tour if need be. That said I have decided on a late mod 5.7. or 6.1 hemi. my intentions were find a totaled pull out of a 5.7. motor transx, brain, harness ect.

I know many people are now making a wiring harness that will work or help for the akter market, who is making the best harness currently and do you guys see things changing for the better with the aftermarket harnesses and say a 6.1 after market motor.

I would only guess a complete tare out of a totaled 5.7 car/ truck would work but what would the down sides be?

I am guessing I would still have to do the gauges and dash work in painless, ect?

Any suggestions, what are the pittfalls and any recomendations?

I am going comeplete mustang II front suspension. I believe I am simply going to use an 8 3/4 rear suspension with springs, nothing crazy, but ya never know.

thanks for any help as I am no mechanic and dont knwo these rigs at all.

This going to be a full fendered ride all the parts are there and very nice and straight.

Are there any websites, suppliers, ect to make this easier or for purchases. Anyone have an idea where the cheapest place, salvage yard out west is for a pull out, complete one?

I know where a 07 4x4 durango is, but its a 4x4 and thus stuff I dont need and probably issues changing stuff?
