Metal Prep To Stop Rust (Ospho, Rust Bullet,Other)?

Metal Prep To Stop Rust (Ospho, Rust Bullet,Other)? - 12/24/10 11:22 PM

I'm having all my body panels media blasted as well as my rear housing. I'm looking for some suggestions on what to apply to the rusty areas after blasting to prevent it from coming back through again. I've heard both good and bad expericnes with Ospho when used on restorations. Will Silver Bullet do the job I'm looking for? How about Por15? Looking for something that will work with standard primer/paint coating processes. Thoughts/expericnes anyone?

Personally I would use the factory method and call it a day. If you do proper rust removal, metal prep, and apply the primer, sealer (zinc chromate, etc.) and paint it like the factory and did you should have no further worries. Nothing on the market will fix short cutting rust removal, cover it all you like, it will come back eventually.

On a side note; I wouldn't use POR15 on my lawnmower.

After blasting I would hit the metal with a metal prep/conditioner, something with phosphoric acid. I used to use ppg dx579 but can't seem to get it around here anymore so I picked up some of por-15's 'prep & ready' metal prep. I also wouldn't use por-15 itself on my lawnmower but I think their metal prep liquid should be okay. I think it's pretty close to what I was using before, seeing as it's phosphoric acid and zinc phosphate. The ppg dx579 neutralizes and rust that may have formed since prepping the metal and lightly etches the metal. You apply the stuff with a fine scotchbrite pad, let it sit on the metal and react for 5-10 minutes or so, then clean the metal with laquer thinner to get all the acid off. Then hose on your epoxy primer.

phosphoric acid can be picked up at Ace Hardware under the name skyco ospho. It's cheap for a quart bottle.

BTW, I agree on the Ospho as a metal prep

Thanks again for the input. From what I researched I think Ospho will do the trick as well.

I still like POR 15. I never use it to bury rust, however. I sandblast, and then etch with there Metal Ready. And I only use it in places that "the sun don't shine," as they still haven't got the uv light thing fixed, and the paint fades. Inside door bottoms, inside fender bottoms, all with good, lasting results. But I also put Rust O Leum over the Metal ready, without problems. It is a great etch. Ospho is great too. There are so many ways, find one that works for you. Just my
