Cowl Vent Paint Prep

Cowl Vent Paint Prep - 12/17/10 02:08 AM

Anybody have a good way to prep a cowl vent for paint??? I've tried a couple different things, but haven't found a good way to sand in between the little bars of the vent. One of the last things I've got left to prep, hoping that there's a quick way to clean them up. Let me know what you've done, thanks.

That is one of the worst spots to prep. Honestly, I just grab some sand paper and get to work. I have not found an easy way to do it.

Scotch brite pads work well.

Sticky backed sandpaper over a popsicle or paint stir stick and floss away.

If you can't find any sticky sandpaper you can staple the paper to the wood.

Wire wheel on a drill or die grinder. Be sure and wear eye protection.

Make your kids do it!
my daughter has helped me prep 5 allover repaints, getting pretty good at it too.

but seriously the fine wire brush on a drill will get you started, followed by folded over sandpaper then 3M dark red scuff pad and oh-yeah a couple of hours of time

How about a 36 grit disc on a grinder?

OP is looking for advice to prep, not strip

Red scuff pads always works just fine

I will add to remember to clean the area out with high pressure air hose.
At least 5 seperate times, throughly at every angle possible.
That ia a giant trap for crud to wreck a fresh paint job..

BTW,
I used a paint stick with scuffin pads on mine...

What do you guys do on the inside of the cowl area and the underside of the cowl? I've got the plastic grill vents on mine so at least I can take them off and get my arm in there but it still looks like a nightmare of a job no matter how I do it.
