what tires??? - 12/16/10 02:06 AM

I have some 4"x15" front rims and I need to know what a good tire size would be for the street.
No RWL. Going on a '71 Dart. And i would like it to fill the wheelwell some what.

Something in a 165/70 to maybe 185/70, maybe even 75 or 78 series to get the height. Depending on ride height & wheel offset, 27"-28" is about max tire height before you need to trim the bottom front corners of the wheel openings.
Back in the day we ran VW Beetle size on 4" wheels, which was something like 5.60 x 15; my drag car runs 7.10 x 15 Morosos on a 3.5" wheel, so sizing is approximate at best.
You can play with tire sizes at discounttire.com if you look around on their website, they have a comparison chart you can plug different sizes into.

I like a retro 70's ProStock/SuperStock look. IIRC, the 215/75R-15 is about 27 inches tall on my 3&1/2" centerlines.

People say they shouldn't be mounted on such a narrow rim. I've ran them for 10+ years, no problem and there's even some curvy roads I commonly drive. But the car is a dragcar style ride (stiff rear leaves, no front swaybar) so I don't push it excessively.

The other caveat is that the taller the tire, the more you have to crank up the T-bars to clear the inner fenderwells.

as it sits now with 14's on the front I have to crank the T bar just to get a level ride, and that's with 1/2" lowering blocks out back. LOL

If you have SuperStock springs and a 27"-28" tire out back it will certainly raise the rear of the car.

You can flip the front leaf spring hanger bracket, some drilling/mod's req'd, or live with it.

Lowering blocks tend to create a "torque arm" that will induce wheel hop.

while it's not a good picture, here's the tire I came up with. Dean, I took your lead and went with 205's instead of the 215's. Glad I did, as I think the 215's would be too high for this car, but your right about the old ProStock look. I dig it. I think I want to lower the front a few more turns. Waddaya think?
