What carburetor would you guys recommend for a daily driver 440 truck? It is a mild 440 (9.5:1, maybe 400 hp). I would like maintain a hint of mileage at least.

I'm currently running a 750 cfm vacuum secondary Edelbrock #1407. I'm chasing a stumble and have gone through it several times and am looking to move on and try something different. I'm considering an Edelbrock AVS.

Thanks.

Eddy, but not the 750. Almost every 750 they made stumble. I've had GREAT responce out of every Eddy carb I've used.

Spread-bore. A well tuned spread-bore on a well tuned engine.
I'm a HUGE fan of the Eddy/Carter AFB's, but if you want fuel economy, you're off to the wrong start with both your vehicle AND carb choice!

FWIW, my 79 PW had a 360 with an Eddy 600 and I got 8mpg on a good day. And I drove this thing daily for a decade, and 8mpg was about it! It was FAST and it was RELIABLE to a fault, but HUNGRY!

And you need to read and understand the manual for the Eddy carbs. They also really like a 4-hole spacer under them.

A small eddy maybe a 1406 (600) but make sure w it that the choke is right, the tension and esp that the "pulloff" opens it a small correct amt when it starts. If you have a spreadbore I'd have Demonsizzler prep you a thermoquad. I had one on a C boat 440 & it ran good and pulled hard considering. EDIT meant to say had a PO installed 600 on the C body

I've got a thermoquad on my 440 and really like it. I got 16 mpg on a trip last summer in my road runner. Drove like grandpa though!

A good TQ core is in the BB section. 73 or 74 440 truck carb. Good price too.

Thanks. Has anyone ran a Road Demon on the street and know anything about mileage? And by the way, I consider "good mileage" to be in the double digits (I set my goals low).

Your best bet would be a spreadbore style carb, The TQs are good on gas but they can be finicky if not set up right, another carb that will do well is the Holley 6210 650dp spreadbore, it will be easier on gas then a squarebore, but it'll have that kick in the ass feeling when you get on it & open the larger secondaries, i had one on a mild 340 back in the 80s & it was a tire fryin mother.

What gear? Initial timing? Cam? LSA? Compression?

All those things left out affect as a whole. Especially, a short stroke smallblock with a biggish carb. A 650 would help driveability. BUT, I would try dialing in more initial mech. advance and some carb tuning. Are the idle mixture screws responsive when adjusted??
