Mounting a Tuff wheel

Mounting a Tuff wheel - 11/24/10 03:43 PM

I found a real nice original Tuff steering wheel. I want to put it in my 1971 Charger to replace the standard plastic 3-spoke.

I hear a lot about adaptors and such with the Tuff wheels. Do I need anything special to mount it on a standard console column?

Thanks Moparts

Yep, you need one of these 3467186 adapters. This one is missing the horn ring but shows the correct mounting nuts.

This one has the horn ring and pigtail you need but is missing the mounting nuts.

The splines are different between the passenger car adapters and the adapters used on trucks; they are not interchangeable.

I put a car one on my '78 D150 pickup when I put a '72 E-body wheel in. Haven't tried going the other way.

I know a 78 Warlock adapter will not fit a 71 Charger... believe me I tried...

I wonder if the type of steering column has anything to do with the splines matching? Power vs. manual I mean...

The one I used came from a '71 Dart. It may be that you can use car ones on a truck but not the other way around. The only other one I have is from a Cordoba. I think one has a fat spline for locating.

Will the ribbed adapter/extension from a Challenger column adapt an aftermarket Tuff wheel to an A-body steering assembly?

That adapter is a lot longer than an a-body one so it will put the steering wheel a lot closer to you.

Depends if it is was a tilt column or not. Tilt column adapters for tuff wheels won't work on E-body columns.

Tilt column adapters are very rare and would only work on a tilt column. I've been looking for one for years.

The 70-71 & 72 parts manuals only show the 3467186 spacer (adapter) and the three 6029392 mounting nuts. Just curious how/where you found information on the tilt adapter.

Maybe mine is the tilt adapter; that would make it worth... what $2000 or $2500...

It wouldn't have come on a '71-72 tilt wheel. Probably a later truck or a car like the Magnum. All I have is this one single picture. Supposedly this is about 1 inch thick.
