abs light and brake light on UPDATE - 11/23/10 12:35 AM

Truck is a 1997 dodge 1500 4x4 with 360.Can the speed sensor cause this or is it something else. The brake pedal feels fine with good braking.I checked the codes by grounding pin 13.It showed code 6 which was erratic speed sensor reading while rolling.I replaced the sensor.Didnt work so I took it back out and cleaned the mounting area really well (rust buildup)and replaced it.I have driven it about 50 miles with no lights coming on so maybe its fixed. Thanks to all who helped.

Most likely rear speed sensor mounted on diff. I think its a dealer item only.

edit- nevermind the input for the speedo is on the transmission.

See if you can get someone with a scantool to get the ABS codes, that will narrow your search.

Or get out your multimeter and start checking the wheel sensors. Low brake fluid can also set the lights off, but since you say braking is fine I would doubt it.

Resistance between the two terminals on the speed sensor should be between 1000-2500ohms.

The RWAL speed sensor air gap should be .005in - .050in

on that year dodge ram the speed sensor is in trans case(tail shaft) has nothing to do with abs. the rear abs sensor is in top of rear axle housing, runs off plate next to ring gear. could that one or left or right front sensors or wire split or rotted going to them

was just thinking have not work on a 1997 ram in a while, do those just have rear abs? if so just replace rear axle sensor. or try cleaning it remember it gets metal gear chips on it and fails to read

I was just looking it up on alldata and it mentions some have 4 wheel abs so it may have front wheel speed sensors

my 2000 sport 4x4 ram had 4 wheel abs think it was dot std from then on older rams think it was optional so most had rear only

use a DMM and check the sensor with the specs I posted earlier to test it. If it checks out inspect the wiring

Most likely the speed sensor.
Aftermarket does sell them, Carquest etc...

Here is what mine looked like
01 Ram 1500

Check the fuses both. The brake lights and the abs fuses. The codes can be read by grounding one of the pins if i remember its pin 13 in the dlc. Then read the flashes of the abs light. Btw the rear sensor should read around 1200-1500 ohms.

Had the problem on my Dodge. I changed the speed sensor in the differential several times. It would clear up for a while and throw the codes again. Always breke and abs light. I was told by a dodge mechanic to change the brakelight switch. I did and it never happened again. Also the cruise control would go funky.

i pulled the rear abs sensor out and cleaned it.No luck they came back on after about 5 miles.I was not braking at the time.I was on the freeway at about 65 mph.
