727 opinions needed!

727 opinions needed! - 11/16/10 09:58 PM

I need opinions. I have a 528 Hemi with a 727 stock hemi stall converter (2500 to 2800 I believe) and 3:23 rear. The trans drives me nuts because it up shifts super quick under normal driving. It feels like most of my driving is in 3rd gear. Is there a way to adjust this? I have the kickdown set all the way back at full throttle. Any input appreciated!

I believe the normal shift points with an easy throttle are 18 and 28mph.

Linkage or cable kickdown?

If linkage, does the aftermarket carburetor have the correct Mopar throttle lever extension?

The trans upshifts are controlled by governor pressure over coming throttle pressure. If the kick down is adjusted as far back as you can go,then you will have to modify the governor. A&A sells them and they can be changed in the car. If your cheap like me you can modify your own. Drilling the inner weight with a 3/8" bit 3/8" deep. Take the outer weight reduce the diameter by 1/8". Leave .100" untouched on both ends so it still fits correctly in the bore. This will get you pretty close.

What about this question you failed to answer? What you want to do can still be affected by this.

My bad! Its a lokar cable.

The Lokar only works properly if the travel of the carburetor lever matches the travel of the transmission lever, they are usually not the same.

Redrilling the hole on the transmission lever will most likely allow you to adjust the light throttle shift points without any governor mods.

Would it not do the same by adjusting some slack in the cable? Right now it moves right when the throttle moves.

No, the Lokar is not setup properly for the application it is sold for.

The cable setup sold by Bouchillon is the better/correct setup to use .

I would suggest putting a set of gauges on the trans ... measuring line and gov pressures.

If I understand you correctly it would be like choking up on a bat? Do you know the proper measurements for the travel? Thanks,

By design, the hemi/3.23 was intended to shift into 3rd gear between 13 and 19 mph ('68 service manual). Make sure that your cable has the correct amount of travel and is adjusted to help increase the upshift rpm. But with that you may still want a higher upshift. Reducing the outer governor weight will increase the light throttle upshift.

Did measurements and altered the kickdown arm. Perfectly in sync now. Thanks to all
