hotwire/starting 78 Cordoba w/o a switch - 11/14/10 04:01 AM

I bought a 78 Cordoba with a 400 and it has the steering column shredded (i.e. the key lock and wiring are laying all over the floor.)I just bought the car for the running gear and would just like to fire it up.Anyone have any info on how this is done without reinstalling the switch mess?

Hook a wire from the battery pos to the coil pos and jump the starter relay terminals to crank it over.

Thanks Stumpy-will my electronic ignition be ok doing this?

If you do this, there will be no resistor for the coil, I don't know if it would even work. The SIMPLE way would be to look at the alternator, should be a green and blue wire. Pull off the blue wire, and feed 12V from the battery TO THAT WIRE. The alternator won't charge, but you will have the coil ballast resistor all in circuit that way.

I assume you know how to jump across the starter relay.

Jump 12V to the end of the 4 terminal ballast that has the blue loop. This'll feed the coil thru the ballast and feed both pins of the 5 pin ECU. Then jump the starter relay as said and at the same time can jump 12V directly to the coil primary positive terminal while it is cranking to help it start.

Just for future reference the coil gets 12v didrectly from the key switch in start. It doesn't go through the resistor until you go to the run circuit.

Lemme get this straight-you put the lime in the coconut an...opps
OK so
-jump 12 volt from battery to blue terminal on ballast
-short the relay accross
-and 12 volt from the battery to the pos. side of the coil(is this last step just while cranking and to be removed at startup? or left on after startup also?)
Thanks guys

If you go to the ballast with 12v then you don't need to run a wire to the coil.

Allright, thanks Stumpy.I know this engine is a good runner but it's always good to be able to fire 'em up. Dave
