front brake pulling to right - 11/09/10 04:19 PM
I have drum brakes and the front right brake pulls very hard to the right. The car was stored for about 5yrs. I have checked the bleeders on the rest of the wheels and they are fine. I also adjusted the shoes and still have the problem. I really can't drive the car this way. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Pull both front wheels bleed right side first then bleed left I have had this happen on various vehicles before and we always got it corrected by bleeding the brakes the proper way of furthest first closest last! JMO

The previous post is complete overkill. It's probably pulling because one of the brake hoses has gotten restricted..They naturally do this as the hoses get old even in non use. Just replace the 2 front brake hoses, and this should fix it. Assuming the parts in the drum are good, and they are adjusted and bled properly.

My question is do YOU know the brakes worked at the time the car was parked?
Plugged hose/ line
Drums don't match shoes---turned too big, etc
junk on shoes--oil, brake fluid, or shoes damaged by water
Stuck / rusted cylinder
If you don't know the car's history, maybe some tool put both secondary shoes on one side, and both primary shoes on the other--and that's been done.

It's pulling hard to the right cause the left side is near dead. open it (left side) up & (1) good basic visual then have a helper press the pedal slightly (just not enough to pop the wheel cyl pistons out if in fact they are not stuck) & you see if things are being activated & go from there

I have did just that. The wheel cyl is working. I think I will try the bleeding trick and then new hoses if that does not work. All brake hardware and shoes were new when car was put away. Can hoses rot from sitting? Thanks

They can but it takes 20 or 30 years after they are new.

What Manifold said on the (self) adjusters. DR (left) side needs the left hand threaded one(s) & left hand threads have a distictive weird twist to em that you can easily ID just by a quick glance whereas RH threads look (almost) straight

I had the same problem on my 69 RR. There was a restriction (old brake fluid that had turned to goo)in the metal line and not the rubber hose. I would disconnect the line from the distribution block and at the rubber hose and blow compressed air thru it. You might be surprised what comes out.
Many folks never replace the brake fluid in their old cars which is a big mistake.

I never thought of that. I will try to blow it out and see. when I pulled the car out of storage,it had a dry master cyl. I put some fluid in it and then pumped the petal. The petal became hard and has never went down since. Maybe something happened there? thanks

I'd undo the line(s) at the M/C & bleed it then bleed the wheels
