what is correct timing for my mild 440?

have mild 440 in 68 Coronet
268 XE cam,.040 over ,RPM Perf intake,
750 Holey, KB Hyper pistions, 9 7/1compression,
for street gas, dynoed at 400hp & 500trq
seems running warm 195-210temp.
is that common temps for a 440? has 26" Mopar BB radiator and clutch fan and shroud.
i am not sure what i should expect or do to fine tune .
we just chked timing and it was 25. so changed that to 32 . adjusted carb a bit
so now do I have to change advance in stock

I would set total timing and let idle timing fall where it may, or get your distributor re-curved.
Best power will likely be between 32 and 36 degrees.

pretty much what dynorad said. with larger cams i like to shorten up the mechanical advance in the distributor so i can run more initial timing. helps to clean up the idle. with a smaller cam such as yours i woudnt worry about it. if you have a factory oem distributor it may me a good idea to recurve it as it may not reach full advance till 3500-4000 rpm. pulling the heavy spring out of the dizzy and leaving the light one in will get you close.

as far as temperature, what thermostat do you have? from a performance standpoint, 160-180 would be best. 195-210 is nothing to worry about. my junk creeps up to that in traffic regularly. i think most modern cars run no cooler than 195 to help emmisions. if you have a fresh motor, it may run cooler after you have a few miles on it. idle speed...800ish in park. the timing and torque convertor will have a big effect on how much it drops in gear.

The Mopar Performance distributer already has the light spring in it. I have a very mild 440 in my 69 Road Runner and have my total set at 38º without the vacuum advance hooked up. Although I could probably stand to back it off one or two degrees.

With the vacuum advance hooked up, your total timing should increase to around 52º. Adjust that by turning the allen screw in the vacuum canister, counter clockwise to decrease.

i am running 180 thermostat,
2400 stall Mopar Torque converter, 3.23 rear,
motor has less than 150 miles on it since was built.

Set it where it starts and runs the best with out kicking against the starter or pinging under load.
If you want to set for total aT X RPM you will have to recureve teh distributor advance to make sure that the advance if fully advaced at that RPM. OEM it just plain won't work out.

I would set initial at ~10 btdc with ported vacuum to dist & remove heavy dist spring, leave the light spring & shorten slots to end up with 36-38 total(checked with vac adv disconnected).(you have a stock dist?)
