BB Timing Cover Seal Replacement - Tips? - 11/08/10 09:05 PM
Short of buying the expensive tool(s) listed in the FSM, anyone have any tips for removing/installing the timing cover seal on big blocks?
Quote:drill 2 small holes the dia of your smallest pin punch (maybe 1/8") in the front of the cover opposite each other maybe at 12 and 6 o'clock around the flat perimeter & drive the seal out the back side evenly. When you drive in the new seal it will cover the holes back up. As said find a round flat plate of scrap metal or hard wood slightly larger OD than the seal & set the cover on something flat/stable & LEVEL/SUPPORT it & get the seal barely started SQUARE w an easy tap or 2 then drive it home w a BFH & something for an extension like a 1" dia 8" drift w as few strokes as possible as each stroke increases the odds you will either tilt it and or distort the thin perimeter edge as the flat face side of the seal goes in the recess 1st & you tap the open face
anyone have any tips for removing
Quote:Large flat blade screw driver and a BFH and give wack it will come out.
I just knock em out with a flat end driver or chisle.............3" exhaust pipe fits perfect when installing those seals.

This is not possible since the steel shell of the seal is inside the cover, what would you push on ?
