Indybrocks T/A heads

Indybrocks T/A heads - 11/05/10 11:58 PM

Building a stroker 408 and have the choice of an M1 single plane intake that's on my self or an LD340 that is on my Swinger.
My concern is that the M1 single plane would not be a good choice for a stroker in a Challenger with a 5spd cruising at 2500 rpm on the highway.
Any one feel like informing or schooling me on the ya and na of the M1 for a street some weekend soloII time trails vs the LD340. I really like dual planes with Thermoquads for the street
The next question is do I just stick with the stock Edelbrock heads from my Swinger (That I would have to put the new 2.02 J heads back on) or dish out and buy a set of Aerohead T/A edelbrocks?
Are they worth it?
My cam is a Comp Mutha Thumpr
rear gears are 3:91s
27" tire
My racing friend says save the labour on pulling the Swinger engine apart, sell the rebuilt J heads and go get a new set of Aerohead T/A heads, bolt on the M1 for the Challenger, creating a real torque monster small block.
What do you all think?

Re: Single plane M1 low RPM driving - 11/06/10 02:45 AM

I have the M1 on the 383 in my Duster - with a Holley 750HP I can cruise around town all day and have plenty of off-line performance. I notice no difference in smoothness between it and dual-planes I've used in other rides.

Specs - Cam (.575/.587 lift, 250/256 duration @ .050, 108 lsa), 3800 stall converter in a FMVB 727, 4.10 rear gears, Edelbrock heads, ~10:1 compression flat tops.

I would expect the M1 to smooth out and run fine above 1800 or 2000 RPM unless the cam is really wild. 2500 RPM cruise should be no problem. Low/mid range torque may be a bit less with the M1... but more top end charge. The dual plane may be faster coming out of the corners in solo due to higher torque.

Every combo is different but the ideal manifold for your app may be the Edelbrock DP air gap... torque boost of a DP with less tradeoff at the top end.

My holley Strip dominator on my 360 is fine i'm running 3.55's with a 28" drag radial and at 40-50mph its around 2K, i do have a 9.5" 4400 rpm stall but i also opened up the plenum and runners. I would say with a 408 you will be fine,

I have an M1 for street 408 not on the road yet, I would think 27" and 3.91 would not have a low rpm concern on this motor, "we'll see", quoted from Charlie wilson's war.

Good combo. You'll love it. Yes, maybe down 20 ft/lbs at 1500 RPM, but up 40-50 HP at ~5,000.

On a stroker with the 4" arm you realy don't need the added bottom end of a dual plane, it will have plenty.

On a 340 that's a different story.

You can always run the TQ on the M1.

Thanks all, I will go M1 with a Demonsizzle Thermoquad.
Any thoughts on the Indy/Aerohead T/A heads, do you guys think it's worth the cost for what I am building?
Thanks again.

Re: Single plane M1 low RPM driving - 11/08/10 01:36 AM

Not sure if it's my poor writing/question skills or there is no experience with what i am asking.
I feel the Indy T/A heads maybe tomuch for a 5500 rpm tops, occasional weekend solo road racer.
I have a set of Edelbrock closed chambers that I can use, they just would have to come off my Swinger and then I would put the rebuilt J heads on the Swinger.
My friend thinks with the stroker I need as much port flow cylinder filling as I can get.
My orginal plan was to build the 408 ballanced with edelbrock closed chamber heads, an LD340intake with a Demon sizzler Thermoquad, 10 to 1 comp, Mutha thumpa cam, tti step headers and a 5 speed trans.
My buddy wants me to run the indy T/A heads and an M1 single plane intake on top of what I have built.
I am worried that it will be to much hi RPM flow with that top end.
Am I making sense?

how is the gear ratio going to be spaced on the 5 speed? what rear gear? i know nothing about road racing, what will the lowest rpm be around the track? I would say if your going to be around 3K to 5K most of the time your going to want the flow.

Re: Indybrocks or edelbrocks? - 11/10/10 05:14 PM

SoloII is on a road course that is just you against the clock.
It's a real blast.
I was just getting the idea that the Indybrocks were designed for more of a 4500 rpm and up kinda ride and that I would be wasting my money.
I may be just fine and happy with a set of Edelbrock heads with the ports and bowls cleaned up.
Thats where I am at with all this.
Thanks again for the replies.

I would avoid buying anything directly from Indy.

Re: Indybrocks or edelbrocks? - 11/10/10 07:42 PM

Well it just comes down to how large your budget is and how fast you want to go. We used CNC ported Edelbrock heads on the 427 road race engine in Tim's Valiant. The Indybrock heads probably would've made a little more power. W series heads would've made even more. A 48 degree block with more cam, more heads and a bigger carb would've made even more power. At some point you just have to make a decision and draw a line.

Re: Indybrocks or edelbrocks? - 11/10/10 10:06 PM

I hear you, I have the stock edelbrocks in hand so I think I will start there.
I can always go bigger later if I am not happy.
I really don't think I will be unhappy with the Eddy heads and M1 cleaned up.
Thanks again all.

If it were me, I'd use the Eddy's. They're bought and paid for, and for what you want to do, I think they'll fill the bill just fine. Could you make more power with something else? Absolutely! Do you NEED more power? Time will tell...
