Flywheel for EFI magnum engine swap? - 08/30/08 12:17 AM

Does anyone make a passenger car flywheel that works with the crank sensor on a 5.9l magnum engine? I want to keep the factory fuel injection but run an A833 4-speed. A stock truck flywheel is too large and I haven't been able to locate anything.

What chassis are you installing it in? I'm not sure about the V8 flywheels, but the V6 units are 143-tooth, same as old-skool 11" units. If you want to stay with OEM flywheels, you MAY be able to swap the tone ring from the V8 to the V6 - note that I haven't tried this, just speculating.

I think there are specific aftermarket or MP flywheels out there, but I'm not sure how many are set up for the crank sensor. I'm sure some other folks here will know.

I am swapping the engine into an 86 diplomat. I have everything I need for the conversion from the existing 318/a999 automatic to the 5.9/A833 except for the flywheel.

What bellhousing do you want to use? I don't know what limits are on the FJM chassis, but I assume you have SOMETHING on hand already that is driving the decision process...

MP made a 5.9 magnum flywheel for a 10.5" clutch but they were disco'd in '01 as far as I know.

One of my friends used it in his '82 Ram to swap in a 5.9 mag and keep the 833 OD, it was pretty pricey though, he paid $475 for the flywheel in '98.

I have a bellhousing from a 340 e-body. I don't think the balance on the 6 cylinder flywheel is correct for the v8 but I suppose that could be corrected. Did any smallblock cars come with a 143 tooth flywheel? Will a truck bellhousing fit a passenger car?

You may have to find the old Mopar Perf Magnum 10.5 flywheel as mentioned before.You must use a counterweighted flywheel balanced for 5.9L Magnum only.Possibly a bellhousing can be modified to use the large Magnum flywheel and the 833.Only other option is to use the 10.5 regular stuff and rebalance the entire assembly using a counterweighted 360 wheel.

I'm about 99% sure that the Maggie V6's are neutral balance, so they won't play well with the 5.9L balance. My thinking was that maybe you could swap the tone ring from the V8 to the V6 OEM flywheel, since the V6 accepts a 10.5" clutch. I'm also pretty sure that the pre-Magnum Daks used a bellhousing that accepts a round bearing retainer that is probably the same size as the OD833. IIRC, it uses a hydraulic clutch setup, so that might complicate things. The early Daks were TBI, so I don't think they used a crank sensor or tone ring, though.

I was thinking maybe I could use a 130 tooth neutral balance flywheel and attach the tone ring from a flexplate for a 5.9l magnum automatic trans which would give me the crank trigger and balance weights needed for the engine. Anybody know of anyone who has tried this or have any thoughts about why it will or won't work?

Real problem is the Magnum flywheel.You can do without the stock sensors with a Fast combo distr/cam/crank sensor.The Magnum assembly is lighter,so it may be possible to remove enough weight from a earlier 5.9L flywheel to match it to a Magnum flywheel.Easy way is to use the Fast set up and rebalance.On using the tone ring I doubt it would hold up under much abuse used in that way.
