1985 shelby charger help - 10/31/10 09:27 PM

So i just bought a 1985 chelby chager, 2.2l turbo speed, the car was always out west and i bought it here in WNY yesterday, it runs and goes but needs some tinkering, but for 500 for a car with really no rust cant complain. now im looking at the title, and the last digits are 360000, does this mean any thing, i searched and yes thats the production number but is this the 36th? or the 360,000th? any one no?

The gurus over at www.TurboDodge.com can answer some questions. If its running good expect low 16's high 15's. If its running great, 14,s are common. Tweeked a bunch and 10's have been reported.

The cams in these are VERY mild. 240 In 244 ex with 0.430 lift. Just advancing them 5 degrees helps some. I was running a 260 deg at 0.460 lift. Was quite a wake up for that car.

Some 85's did have Turbo issues, agian TurboDodge has answers.

If its a 5 speed, it has an A-525. Killer OD with 3.56:1 Ring and Pinion gears. Not enough tire, you'll find out.

The poor little things top out at 125 mph.
If you're doing 65, downshift to 4th, miss and hit 2nd, it'll bounce the tach off the fuel gauge and the clutch will explode.
Don't ask me how I know.

I had a couple of those cars. They're a hoot to drive and get good mileage.
Install the minivan front brakes and Shelby Daytona rear discs and it'll toss you through the windshield.

Check out www.fwdperformance.com for goodies. Cindy knows her stuff.

Nothing really special about the 85's other than it was the last year of the G-head. All later years run the swirl head. Take a look over in the knowledge base section and forums over at turbo-mopar.com for some info. Another useful resource is minimopar.knizefamily.net they have some decent reference info there. Basically the first thing most previous owners of these cars do is [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] up the vacuum lines not knowing what they're doing. If you're having any run or boost problems, check that first. The shelby chargers are cool little cars, I used to have an 83 Shelby Charger with the 2.2HO carb. Not the fastest car out there but it was a blast to drive and it was the blue/silver two-tone and it was a cool looking little car.

I had a black and silver 87 for a daily driver from 97 to 05. Fun little car and great fuel economy. I miss it sometimes, but it was going to need paint and bodywork soon. Just the cost of materials would have put me seriously upside down financialy in it as those cars hold very little value.
