speedo gauge or cable problem?

speedo gauge or cable problem? - 10/30/10 09:13 PM

71 Satellite, standard speedo. Recently had problem where needle pegged, and I heard some noise behind the gauge, then needle disappeared.

Replaced gauge with a used one from a parts car. checked cable, and it seems to spin normally at both ends. Plastic retainer at gauge end is perfect. Connection at tranny is good.

Test drove for first time, and replacment speedo worked for a short while, then needle moved forward about 20 mph and a loud spinning noise occurred behind gauge, intermittently. When noise stops, speed reading returns to normal.

Another bad speedo?
Bad cable?
Cable need lube?

Thanks

Easiest thing to do is disconnect the cable from the speedo and pull the core. Do a quick clean and lube with a light coat of vaseline and see what happens.

Got it fixed. Cable was apparently dry. Clean, but dry. Vaseline got it quited down. Thanks for the info!
