Drive shaft length question - 08/29/08 02:07 PM

Earlier this week I broke the tail shaft housing on my 727. It has been brought to my attention that I probaly have to long of a drive shaft. The facts 1967 Coronet 440 orginally had a 318 now has a 383 with a 727 and 8.75 rearend. could someone tell me what my driveshaft should measure. also my slip yoke fit up inside the tail shaft 4.875 is this to far?
The length of my current drive shaft measure's 51.5 Is this the correct length for my car?

That length is for 67-69 Dart 4 speed w/an 8.75. Measure the U-joint cap c/l to c/l and allow for approx. 1" for front yoke travel.

How much free play did you have with the one that was in when the tail broke?. With the flat aftermarket extension housing seal you want to have about ~3/4".

Would you have any idea what the length should be from center to center of yokes for a 67 coronet with a 383 727 and 8.75 rearend. The reason I'm asking is a guy down the road from me parts out old mopars and he might have one Thanks

No bro I dont but the shaft you have insert it in the trans all the way & measure the distance it would take for you to pull it back to seat in the pinion flange & subtract 3/4-1" from that figure. That's the one you need & it's contingent on it having the same front yoke as the one you used to measure & you could switch yokes if necc esp if you are putting in new u joints which would be a good idea.
