Will a 904 tranny fit behind a 360? - 10/27/10 07:13 PM
Greetings, I am installing a 360 from a 1978 Ram Charger into a 47 Dodge pickup. Installed a K-frame from a F-body in the 47. Replaced the stock 4:88 rearend with an 8.75 from a 1964 B-Body. I got a 727 (4x4) and torque convertor with the engine. I found a low mile 904 from a mid 70's Chrysler that was behind a 318. I understand the 318 is internal balance, 360 external. So, will a 904 with the 727 touque convetor fit behind the 360? This is my first attempt at such a project, so some/any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I have one behind my 360 in my Dart with a 3500rpm
convertor works just fine bolt up swap. You can not use the 727 convertor you must use a convertor for a 904.

not sure I understood,
you want to use the torque converter from the 727 in the 904? and bolt that up to the 360?
I don't think that works.
pretty sure the torque converters are different between a 727 and a 904, but someone more knowlegable should be along to say.

No way can you use a 727 converter in front of a 904 transmission.

Thanks for the info. I have the 727 and 727 torque convertor. It sounds like the 904 will fit. Sounds like I need a 904 torque convertor. Does the 904 torque converor need to come from a 360, or will one from a 318 fit? Does the internal/external balance just applies to flywheels if you have a manual tranny? Thanks again. Hope to have it on the road soon.

If you run a neutral balance torque convertor, you will need a weighted flexplate.

360 means you need an external balance in back.
904 means a 904 converter.
You can buy a 360/904 converter and get a neutral 904 flexplate.
You can buy a 360 (offset weight) flexplate and any 904 converter.
I don't think the stock 727 flexplate will work with a 904 converter (smaller bolt pattern).

Some 727's use the small flex plate. And most after market performance converters used the small pattern flex plate.

Good stuff. One more question. If I weld in the cross member mount on the frame for the 904, would I need to move it if I decided to install a 727?

727 and 904 use the same crossmember and mount
